Paleodemography of a medieval population in Japan
The purpose of this study is to obtain demographic data regarding the medieval population buried at the Yuigahama-minami site in Kamakura, Japan, and to detect a secular trend in the life expectancy of Japanese population over the last several thousand years. Inter-generation Differences in Cephalic Measurements
顔面サイズの世代差を調べるために,青年女性65名(平均年齢22.3歳)とその母親55名(平均年齢51.1歳),青年男性35名(平均年齢25.0歳)とその父親29名(平均年齢56.5歳)について6項目の頭顔部寸法を計測した。男女の下顎角幅と女性の頭長と申告身長に5%水準で有意な世代差が認められた。ステップワイズ判別分析の結果,世代の判別において最も重要な項目は下顎角幅であった。子供世代の方が下顎角幅が小さく,顔サイズが小さい。世代差の原因が骨あるいは軟部組織の時代変化,下顎骨の成長,軟部組織の加齢による増加のいずれによるかは,今回のデータからは不明である
First discovery of the ancient dingo‐type dog in Polynesia (Pukapuka, Cook Islands)
A Dingo‐type dog skeleton was excavated in Pukapuka Island of the Cook Islands with an estimated age of about 350 years. Luomala (1960) suggested that an investigation of the breed of Polynesian dogs would provide clues to the history of migration of the Polynesians, who domesticated the dogs. 野田市にある縄文遺跡の大崎貝塚において,1986年,シカ•イノシシなどと共にウマの骨が出土した。縄文貝塚からは従来ウマが記録され,当時代にウマが存在していたとされるが,近年,精密で大規模な発掘が増加したにもかかわらず,縄文文化層からウマの出土した例が増えないことから,従来の記録の信頼性が問われている。大崎貝塚のウマの骨にっいては,出土状況に他の動物骨との相違が認められず,当貝層が形成された縄文後期に属する可能性が示唆された。そこで,骨のフッ素分析による年代判定を試みた。その結果,ウマは後世の混入であると判断された。他の縄文貝塚においてもウマの骨の混入が指摘されており,「縄文馬」の存否については再検討を要する
