  • The Decline of Labour Process Analysis and the Future Sociology of Work

    Open Access•Damian O’doherty, Damian O''Doherty et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology•2009•Cited by: 7•References: 43

Labour process analysis (LPA) is a well-established approach to the sociological study of work which attends to the instabilities of capitalism and, more specifically, to the volatile and contested nature of social relations at work. However, an unreflexive 'neo-orthodoxy' has emerged in recent years that is constrained by a series of dualistic and (critical) realist assumptions which inhibit the development of this distinctive sociology of work.…

  • Organization: On the Theory and Practice of Excess

    Alf Rehn, Damian O'Doherty•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Can organization theory truly grasp excess, or is this a constant paradoxical other of organization, a permanently elusive remainder? In posing these questions we note that excess has proven notoriously tricky to handle through conventional modes of analytical scholarship, an…

  • Transformative Capacity, Information Technology, and the Making of Business 'Experts

    Open Access•H Knox, Damian O’doherty et al.•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 15

This paper explores the making of experts and the basis of claims to expertise in corporate organisational settings. The performance of expertise within organisations is increasingly associated with the implementation and use of integrated business information systems which purport to abstract the world into an informational form to make businesses run more efficiently. We argue that as these systems are put to work to replace the calculations of…

  • Debating Labour Process Theory: The Issue of Subjectivity and the Relevance of Poststructuralism

    Open Access•Damian O’doherty, Damian O''Doherty et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology•2001•Cited by: 37•References: 30

This paper locates labour process theory in broader sociological debates concerned with the action-structure dualism before examining three broad programmes for research that have emerged in response to the question of subjectivity and agency. Whereas the `orthodox' school tends to re-assert the structuralist and economistic features of Marx, the `anti-realist' or deconstructionist position invites the abandonment of analysis that has traditional…
