This paper tests the hypothesis that certain sound–meaning patterns associated with “mother” and “breast” may reflect a very ancient codiffusion, inherited from the earliest migrations of Homo sapiens and from the centrality of the mother–infant dyad. Within a framework of “linguistic archaeology,” four phonotactic traits are examined across 2,959 languages (“mother”) and 7,322 languages (“breast”) from the Lexibank and ASJP databases: [n]/[ŋ] an…

    Open Access•Julien D''Huy, Julien D’huy et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropozoologica•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 66

From the origin of the dog and its diffusion to the light of its mythology. Using phylogenetic tools, it is possible to reconstruct how myths about dogs spread around the world, as well as their probable point of origin. The tree built from mythological motifs associated with dogs takes root between Central and East Asia. It shows two diffusions of these motifs in America, the second only affecting the northern part of the continent. The mytholog…

    Open Access•Julien D’huy, Julien D'Huy•ARTICLE•Strenae•2020

  • Neural Correlates of Myths in Which an Image Becomes Alive

    Julien D’huy, Julien D'Huy•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2013•References: 22

How do we explain the universality of a mythical motif in which an artistic image becomes “alive”? It is significant that brain areas activated by real movement are also activated by action sentences or images implying motion. Activation of these motion areas probably generates the sense of motion that emanates from images. It is notable in this connection that action sentences read before or after viewing images with implied motion may be more e…
