A scoping review of inquiry in medicine and nursing using Dewey’s perspective
Health professions educators widely agree that inquiry must be fostered in trainees, yet fundamental questions remain about how to cultivate it as a habit. This scoping review examined instructional approaches to teaching inquiry in medicine and nursing through the lens of John Dewey’s philosophical framework, which conceptualizes inquiry as comprising both a five-phase method and a psychological attitude toward inquiry methods. Our analysis of 1…
Sensitivity to Distance and Choice of Destinations
A model of destination choice is derived from verifiable assumptions about people's perception of distance. It is postulated that differences between destinations at varying distances are only perceptible when they exceed some tolerance level. Under reasonable assumptions on the distribution of this level among the population, this leads to a sigmoid market share or choice function. The model can be estimated from observations of actual trip maki…
The Spread of Traffic Effects and Regions of a Network
A regionalization scheme for transport networks is sought in order to reduce the extent over which the impact of investing in specific links need be traced. Empirical data on travel are examined for structural regularity. The regions of a small city which emerge are tested by reassigning existing traffic to a modified transport network. A link in one region is changed to trace the permeation of link-volume changes through regional partitions. The…
Forecasting intercity commodity transport in the U.S.A
O'Sullivan P. and Ralston B. (1974) Forecasting intercity commodity transport in the U.S.A., Reg. Studies 8, 191–195. The merits of a production constrained gravity model, regression and linear programming formulations in forecasting the distribution of food and animal products between 25 metropolitan areas in the U.S. are tested using 1963 and 1967 Census of Transportation data. The differences between actual trade flows and those estimated by e…
