  • Faunal analysis from Kibaoni, a late precolonial Pimbwe village in Rukwa Valley, Tanzania

    Amy E Foutch, Teresa E Steele et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 9

The cultural history and past ecology of the northern Rukwa Valley, southwestern Tanzania, are largely unknown. We report here the results of excavations conducted at Kibaoni, a Pimbwe village located near Katavi National Park, which, based on ceramic typologies, displays a long sequence of occupation dating to as early as the fourth century AD. The faunal remains at the site indicate opportunistic hunting practices similar to those seen in Rukwa…

  • Systematic Butchery by Plio/Pleistocene Hominids at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania [and Comments and Reply]

    H T Bunn, Ellen M Kroll et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1986•Cited by: 389

Human origins research by archaeologists has expanded the evidence of the diet and subsistence activities of ancient hominids. We examine an important component of that evidence, the 1.75-million-year-old faunal assemblage from the FLK Zinjanthropus site at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. Skeletal-part frequencies are used to evaluate hominid access to and differential transport of carcass portions of differing nutritional value. Cut-mark frequencies an…
