Making and Trading Dress and Décor in Seventeenth-century Scotland
In seventeenth-century Scotland textiles were made in most districts and marketed widely at home and overseas. Woollens and linens, yarn, cloth, bonnets and stockings, with clear regional specialisations, were manufactured, but they were all of low cost and quality. Comparative advantage came from low rural wages. The wide distribution and character of textile production in the seventeenth century proved of great importance for post-Union success…
Kingsbarns
Kingsbarns harbour was constructed in the nineteenth century primarily to facilitate the movement of agricultural goods. The first investment was made by the land-owner but gradually allowed to deteriorate. The second was made by a local farmer to facilitate the shipping of potatoes. It failed ultimately not so much because of poor engineering but because it was displaced by the completion of the railway round the coast of Fife, and was then allo…

A New Look at the Scottish Improvers
Scotland in 1700 was, in European terms, backward in the study of agronomy, but in the course of the eighteenth century the ‘improvers’ became a leading force in the study and practice of agricultural change. Nevertheless, over the course of the century they changed significantly: the early Honourable Society of Improvers, aristocrat-led and amateurish, gave way to a broader-based movement incorporating the rural middle-class, especially clergy a…
Garrett Hardin, The Tragedy of the Commons and the Firth of Forth
Garrett Hardin's theory of the 'tragedy of the commons' is applied to the marine environment of the Firth of Forth, Scotland, where many biological resources were much more plentiful before 1800 than they are today. His ideas are tested against the history of herring fishing, oyster dredging and pollution in the area. In two cases, irreversible resource depletion is found and associated both with failure of self-regulation and external control, a…

was to commemorate this landmark in Scottish historical writing by exploring what some of the previous generations of Scottish historians, from the earlier Middle Ages to the twentieth century, actually did to Scottish history: in other words, to consider how they treated the nation's past, and discuss what effects their treatments actually had on that past itself. The symposium's proceedings are now published, in the form of revised versions of …
Prices, Food, and Wages in Scotland, 1550-1780
This 1994 book is a study of Scottish price history and a major contribution to the economic and social history of early modern and pre-industrial Britain. Using the remarkable series of 'fiars' prices for grains and other contemporary sources, Gibson and Smout focus, in particular, on the prices of grain, meal and animal products, and assess how Scots artisans and labourers could survive in an economy that could pay only very low money wages. Th…

Scottish Emigration in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries
This chapter examines Scotland through perspectives from T. C. Smout, Ned C. Landsman, and T. M. Devine. The 17th century is discussed by Smout, who emphasises the great scale and diversity of Scottish migration to Europe and Ireland before the Union with England in 1707. The 18th-century movement from the Lowlands is discussed by Landsman, who stresses both its probable scale and the difficulty of distinguishing Lowland Scots from the Scotch Iri…
