  • A Ḥarsusi text re-examined

    Aaron D Rubin•ARTICLE•Brill's Journal of Afroasiatic…•2021

Ḥarsusi, one of the six languages that comprise the Modern South Arabian branch of the Semitic family, is still rather poorly attested. One of the major sources of information is a small corpus of texts collected by T.M. Johnstone and published posthumously by Harry Stroomer. The errors present in that published edition have a negative impact on our limited understanding of Ḥarsusi grammar and vocabulary. The present article, which includes a re-…

  • The reliability of published Mehri texts

    Aaron D Rubin•ARTICLE•Brill's Journal of Afroasiatic…•2017

The Mehri texts collected by T.M. Johnstone and published by Harry Stroomer (1999) are an extremely valuable source for the study of the Mehri language, and it was on these texts that I based the first edition of my own Mehri grammar (2010). However, the original Arabic-letter manuscripts made by the native speaker, along with the accompanying audio recordings, reveal that the draft manuscripts on which Stroomer’s edition was based are replete wi…

  • Hulton's Jibbali word-list from 1836

    Open Access•Aaron D Rubin•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•2014•References: 10

In 1836, a British naval surgeon named J.G. Hulton collected lexical data on the Jibbali language spoken on the Omani island of Al-Ḥallaniya (Khuriya Muriya). This is the earliest Jibbali data known to have been collected by a European, and remains today the only published data on the dialect of that island. Wolf Leslau analysed this data ( BSOAS XII, 1947, pp. 5–19) but Hulton's valuable material can now be reconsidered thanks to recent advances…

  • Samuel Archivolti and the Antiquity of the Hebrew Pointing

    Aaron D Rubin•ARTICLE•The Jewish Quarterly Review•2011

The debate over the antiquity of the Hebrew vowel points raged among both Jewish and Christian Hebraists in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Among Jewish grammarians, Samuel Archivolti was one of the earliest critics of the revolutionary ideas of Elijah Levita. Yet Archivolti's work, while not wholly forgotten, has remained largely inaccessible to modern scholars working in this field. Presented here for the first time in English, along w…

  • The Subgrouping of the Semitic Languages

    Open Access•Aaron D Rubin•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 37

The Semitic languages have enjoyed a long tradition of linguistic study, and remain one of the most widely studied of the world's language families. The large amount of scholarship that is generated on both the ancient and modern languages continues to have an effect on our understanding of the internal subgrouping of the Semitic family. Unfortunately, for both the specialist and non-specialist, reliable and up-to-date treatments of this topic ar…

  • The Mehri Participle

    Open Access•Aaron D Rubin•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Asiatic…•2007•Cited by: 1

The verbal form known as the active participle (= AP) is an integral part of the Mehri verbal system, functioning mainly – but not exclusively – as a future tense. 1 Yet despite its frequency, recent synopses of the language have given this form very little attention. For example, in the very important sketch of the Modern South Arabian languages by Johnstone (1975), discussion of the AP is limited to less than one sentence (p. 119). In the very …
