  • The historical background to the elegies on 'Uthmān b. 'Affān attributed to Hassān b. Thābit

    Open Access•W 'Arafat, W ʿArafat•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1970

A total of 32 poems, including some of doubtful authenticity, are ascribed to Hassān b. Thābit in his Dīwān or elsewhere, which can be wholly or partly classified as elegies. It is remarkable, however, that in this total there is not a single poem on an Ansārī while no less than eight are on 'Uthmān b. 'Affān, as compared with only four on the death of the Prophet. Equally remarkable is the fact that there is a wide variety of style and method of…

  • The Historical Significance Of Later Anṣārī Poetry-I

    Open Access•W ''Arafat, W 'Arafat•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1966

Of the poems of boasting ascribed to Hassan b. Thabit, 16 are found on investigation to be by later Ansarls and reflect the inferior status to which the Ansar in general were reduced after the battle of al-Harra and the sack of Madina in the year A.H. 63, as well as, occasionally, the tribal rivalries which prevailed during the Umayyad period

  • The Historical Significance Of Later Anṣārī Poetry-II

Open Access•W ''Arafat, W 'Arafat et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1966

A second group of poems share the same characteristics with the poems discussed in part I of this article, and are of equally late authorship. However, they lack the explicit evidence of a later date. These are nos. VII, X, XIX, LXXIX.2 Poem no. VII is yet one more of those 'defensivexs' poems which seem to indicate that not only the poet, but the whole tribe, in the wider sense, are on the defensive. Although it can be argued that the poem is no…

  • An aspect of the forger's art in early Islamic poetry

Open Access•W ''Arafat, W 'Arafat et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1965

A study of the poetry of the Sīra shows that a high proportion of it is the work of more or less professional forgers who supplied narrators with poems especially prepared to suit the narrative and appeal to the audience whose outlook towards the events of early Islam had undergone considerable change. Two or three generations after the final victory of Islam and the death of the Prophet, the persons as well as the events of that era were becomin…
