  • The History and Composition of the Identified Human Skeletal Collection of the Certosa Cemetery (Bologna, Italy, 19th-20th Century)

    Open Access•M G Belcastro, Benedetta Bonfiglioli et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017•Cited by: 19•References: 39

The purpose of this paper is to present the identified skeletal collection (by age, sex, cause of death, occupation and preservation state) from the Certosa Cemetery of Bologna (Italy), which was reviewed and checked through a consultation of the cemetery archives. The collection consists of 425 skeletons of individuals (from newborn to 91 years old) who died in Bologna between 1898 and 1944. The personal details associated with the skeletons wer…

  • The New Coimbra Method for Recording Entheseal Changes and the Effect of Age-at-Death

    Open Access•C Y Henderson, Mariotti et al.•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Centre de recherches…•2017•Cited by: 33•References: 33

Entheseal changes have been widely used in anthropology to study activity patterns, but there is an increasing awareness that ageing is associated with these changes. The aim of this study was to test each feature of the new Coimbra method for its variability, side asymmetry and its relationship with age. In addition to this, an overall relationship with age was tested for a larger sample. Males 16 and over from the Coimbra skeletal collection of…

  • From corpse to bones

    Open Access•Mariotti, V Mariotti et al.•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Centre de recherches…•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 20

The funerary practices of the Taforalt population (Morocco, about 15-12500 Cal BP), already investigated by the authors in previous studies, were reconstructed through anthropological analyses of human remains (excavated by J. Roche in the 1950s) and examination of the available field documentation. The results indicated that the burial area included primary and secondary depositions, sometimes within the same grave, of approximately 40 adolescen…

  • The New 'Coimbra Method

    Open Access•C Y Henderson, Mariotti et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016•Cited by: 43•References: 13

This paper presents a revised version of the Coimbra method for recording fibrocartilaginous entheses. The method itself is the only biologically appropriate recording method for fibrocartilaginous entheses that scores features separately, thereby ensuring that the aetiology of individual features can be studied. The method divides the enthesis into two zones, scoring the relevant features in each zone. These features represent either bone format…

  • Dental status and 3D reconstruction of the malocclusion of the famous singer Farinelli (1705–1782)

Open Access•M G Belcastro, azadeh zare et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

The famous castrato singer Carlo Broschi, better known as Farinelli (1705-1782), was exhumed by our research group in July 2006 to study his skeletal remains and reconstruct his osteobiography. He was castrated before puberty to preserve his high voice into adulthood. The osteological study has revealed several skeletal features probably related to the effects of castration (Hyperostosis frontalis interna, long limb bones, persistence of epiphyse…

  • Simulated Last Glacial Maximum Δ 14 C atm and the Deep Glacial Ocean Carbon Reservoir

    Open Access•V Mariotti, D Paillard et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•References: 38

Δ 14 C atm has been estimated as 420 ± 80% (IntCal09) during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) compared to preindustrial times (0%), but mechanisms explaining this difference are not yet resolved. Δ 14 C atm is a function of both cosmogenic production in the high atmosphere and of carbon cycling and partitioning in the Earth system. 10 Be-based reconstructions show a contribution of the cosmogenic production term of only 200 ± 200% in the LGM. The r…

  • Recording Specific Entheseal Changes of Fibrocartilaginous Entheses

    Open Access•C Y Henderson, Mariotti et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013•Cited by: 37•References: 17

A working group was established in 2009 during a workshop in Coimbra, Portugal to review the various methodologies used to record entheseal changes (EC) and develop a standardised system to facilitate comparisons across studies. This paper presents the first results of the Coimbra method, a new qualitative method for recording fibrocartilaginous entheses based on the types of changes observed.Materials and methods: The new method divides the enth…

  • Probable early presence of leprosy in Europe in a Celtic skeleton of the 4th-3rd century BC (Casalecchio di Reno, Bologna, Italy)

    Open Access•Mariotti, V Mariotti et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2005•Cited by: 7•References: 20

Examination of the skeleton of an adult male from the Celtic necropolis of Casalecchio di Reno (Bologna, Italy; 4th–3rd century BC) revealed some lesions on the feet, especially bilateral acro-osteolysis of the metatarsals, and on the tibia, fibula and hand. The morphological and radiographic characteristics of the bones are consistent with a diagnosis of leprosy. Other features of the rhinomaxillary region support this diagnosis. As far as we kn…

  • Leprosy in a skeleton from the 7th century necropolis of Vicenne-Campochiaro (Molise, Italy)

    Open Access•M G Belcastro, Mariotti et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2005•Cited by: 7•References: 15

Analysis of the skeleton from tomb 144 of the early medieval necropolis of Vicenne-Campochiaro in Central Italy revealed several features indicative of leprosy. The skeleton belongs to a male estimated to be between 20 and 25 years of age at death. The distal halves of the 1st and 2nd left metatarsals present acro-osteolysis and both legs show severe subperiosteal bone reaction. The facial skeleton shows changes compatible with a chronic inflamma…

  • Masticatory and non‐masticatory dental modifications in the epipalaeolithic necropolis of Taforalt (Morocco)

    Open Access•Benedetta Bonfiglioli, Mariotti et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004•Cited by: 40•References: 19

In this study, we used standardized methods to investigate masticatory and non‐masticatory dental alterations (chipping, notches, interproximal grooves) in teeth from the epipalaeolithic necropolis of Taforalt (Morocco, about 12,000–11,000 BP). The particular distribution of some of the alterations could be related to avulsion of the upper central incisors, a systematic ritual characterizing all adult individuals of the necropolis. Because of thi…
