Struggling against spectres of the past: Democratisation and nation-building in Southern Europe
Auto-determinação, cidadania e organizações internacionais: Reinventando as políticas do império português, 1955-1962
Conc…
The Labours Of (In)Security In Portuguese Late Colonialism
This chapter addresses studies of the historical entanglements between securitarian and developmental languages and repertoires of action during late colonial insurgencies and counter-insurgencies. Health, education, and social policies broadly defined were constitutive elements of imperial strategies designed either to strengthen the allegiance of local populations or to minimize sources of unrest and anti-colonial mobilization. Focusing on the …
The End of the “Happy Times”: The Renewed Internationalization of Debates on Labour Freedom
Ghana’s Complaint Against the Portuguese Empire at the ILO (1961‒1962)
The entangled histories and historiographies of humanitarianism, human rights, and development: Interview with Andrew Thompson
The Internationalisation of the 'Native Labour' Question in Portuguese Late Colonialism, 1945-1962
Portugal, the World Health Organisation and the Regional Office for Africa: From Founding Member to Outcast (1948–1966)
This article discusses the emergence, organisation, interaction and evolution of regional bodies responsible for cooperation in health in sub-Saharan Africa from the late 1940s to the mid-1960s. Focusing on Portugal’s under-researched role in the CCTA and the WHO’s regional office (AFRO), it addresses the issue of health diplomacy and inter-regional cooperation during a period of significant political change on the African continent. Drawing from…
The « Least Irresponsible Organization »: The Portuguese Colonial Question and the International Labour Organization (1945-1962)
From ‘Natives’ to ‘Aborigines’: Late Colonialism, Indigenous Rights and the Global Politics of Sovereignty (1953–1962)
This article addresses the dynamics of political and social continuity and change in Portuguese late colonialism after 1945. By focusing on the 1961 and 1962 imperial reforms, three main arguments are put forward. First, that only by analytically incorporating international and transnational dimensions the Portuguese protracted trajectory of imperial demise can be fully grasped. Second, by engaging with international institutions, norms and idiom…
International Organizations in Colonial Africa
European imperial expansion and consolidation in Africa was, from its inception, a trans-imperial process that was increasingly codified, regulated, and legitimized in an international sphere. Similarly, initiatives that aimed to counter Western dominance and hegemony across the 20th century looked for international institutions as privileged instances for claim-making and enhanced resistance against imperial and colonial projects. All these dyna…
The International Dimensions of Resistance: Portuguese Colonial Labour Policies and Its Critics Abroad (1944–1962)
Colonial Labour Internationalized: Portugal and the Decolonization Momentum (1945–1975)
The history of the convoluted devolution of power in late colonialism can only be fully apprehended if its international and transnational dimensions are brought into the picture. Diverse modalities of internationalism shaped the disparate trajectories of colonialism and decolonization in multiple societal domains, in diverse ways. We depart from the labour question in the Portuguese late colonial empire to highlight three main inter-related aspe…
Internationalism, Imperialism and the Formation of the Contemporary World: The Pasts of the Present
