International Psychology Students Use Multiple Strengths to Enhance Their Learning and Performance on Work Placements
ObjectiveDespite increasing emphasis on work placements in higher education, there has been limited research into international students’ experiences in undertaking work placements, particularly for psychology postgraduate students. Moreover, much research on international students emphasises the difficulties they experience. We argue a shift to acknowledging and building on the strengths of international students may bring benefits to both stude…

Risks and outcomes associated with disorganized/controlling patterns of attachment at age three years in the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth …
Disorganized/controlling attachment in preschool has been found to be associated with maternal and child maladjustment, making it of keen interest in the study of psychopathology. Additional work is needed, however, to better understand disorganized/controlling attachment occurring as early as age 3 years. The primary aims of this study were to evaluate risk factors and outcomes associated with disorganized/controlling behavior at age 3 years and…
Cross-sectional associations of Spanish and English competence and well-being in Latino children of immigrants in kindergarten
The aim of this study is to examine within an ecological model the associations of dual language (Spanish/English) competences with the emotional and behavioral well-being of young children of immigrants in kindergarten. Latino children of immigrants (n = 228) from a public school-based community sample were assessed using standardized, comprehensive measures of Spanish and English oral language competence and normed teacher reports on five dimen…
The Act of Collaborative Creation and the Art of Integrative Creativity
Csikszentmihalyi (1999: 314) argues that 'creativity is a process that can be observed only at the intersection where individuals, domains, and fields intersect'. This article discusses the relationship between creativity and interdisciplinarity in science. It is specifically concerned with interdisciplinary collaboration, interrogating the processes that contribute to the collaborative creation of original ideas and the practices that enable cre…
Embodied Knowledge in Glassblowing
Becoming a proficient glassblower involves an indispensable shift away from cognitive readings of practice towards corporeal readings, marking the development of proficient practical knowledge. In learning glassblowing myself in the course of an ethnography of handicrafts in New York City, the subtleties of apprenticeship, the modes of reading and understanding the practice, both cognitive and corporeal, have emerged, complexifying our understand…

Reading The Biographer's Tale
To say that the most exciting work of literary criticism I have read recently is A. S. Byatt's new novel, The Biographer's Tale (2001), may seem to be a contradiction in terms: novels are not scholarly monographs, novelists are not critics (not, at any rate, in the moment of novel-writing), and the distinction, at least as far as hiring and promotion committees are concerned, must be maintained. But in an era of formal indeterminacy and cross-dis…
Widows’ Rights Questioned
This essay uses court disputes over indigenous widows’ land rights to examine the impact of an expanding national state on indigenous peasant interpersonal relations in late nineteenth-century Ecuador. In doing so, it offers a response to historian Carmen Ramos Escandón's recent call for historical studies of changing family life in order “to know how this domestic web is related to social processes in a broader sense and how the organization of …

Camera medica
Photography is so essentially the Art of Truth — and the representative of Truth in Art — that it would seem to be the essential means of reproducing all forms and structures of which science seeks for the delineation. The influence of suggestion — strong enough to move the four-legged tables of the Spirit-rappers, as Faraday and Carpenter have shown — is certainly more than sufficiently strong to make the hand of the draughtsman deviate from the…

Fractions of Men
In 1866, theAtlantic Monthlypublished a fictional case study of an army surgeon who had lost all of his limbs during the Civil War. Written anonymously by American neurologist Silas Weir Mitchell, 'The Case of George Dedlow' describes not only the series of wounds and infections which led to the amputation of all four of the soldier's arms and legs but also the after-effects of amputation. Reduced to what he terms 'a useless torso, more like some…
