(Re)contextualizing the ‘anti-woke’ discourse
This study examines how ‘anti-woke’ discourse is drawn upon by French and English-speaking X (formerly Twitter) users to abnormalize gender-inclusive language practices from a Critical Discourse Analytic (CDA) perspective ( Fairclough 2010 ). Using strategies and tools drawn from the Discourse Historical Approach ( Wodak and Reisigl 2017 ) and CDA (interdiscursivity and recontextualization), I compare and discuss how ‘woke’ is (re)appropriated wi…
Beyond biology
Hypertension remains a leading modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the United States. Despite advances in detection and treatment, disparities in hypertension prevalence, control, and outcomes persist across racial, gender, and geographic lines, particularly in the rural Deep South. To examine the associations between race, gender, age, and geography on systolic and diastolic blood pressure among adult patients in…
‘I Don't Want to Do the Gender Division, but …’
This article explores how education stakeholders in England represent primary school writing attainment along the axis of gender in the context of literacy concerns after the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a combination of corpus-based and qualitative critical discourse analyses, it shows how gendered linguistic ideological practices are reproduced in education stakeholders’ talk about children's writing. The findings reveal that while traditional ge…

Hosting refugees is the most rewarding experience
This study explores positive migrant storytelling in non-governmental organizations' advocacy campaigns. We focus on the practices and implications of leveraging storytelling towards charity organizations' institutional goals. Drawing upon critical discourse studies and narrative studies, we propose a critical storytelling approach that pays attention to the specific nature of storytelling as a discourse practice in itself. We focus on a UNHCR hu…
[P]aying back to the community and to the British people’
This study explores migrant identity construction in the curated stories of UK-based charity organisations. Drawing upon the paradigms of critical discourse analysis and narrative positioning, we demonstrate how the construction of migrant identities as successful, fulfilled, grateful and resilient reproduce a migration as transaction discourse. We problematise these representations as prerequisites to migrants’ acceptance, given that they not on…
The Self-Determination Inventory
Research literature and community narratives both emphasize the importance of self-determination in the lives of deaf youth. This paper describes the development, initial validation, and potential applications of a translated measure of self-determination for deaf youth, the SDI:SR ASL Translation (SDI:SR ASL). A sample of 3,309 young people who completed the SDI:SR, of whom 392 were deaf, was used in this validation study. Results provide prelim…
Trauma and Resilience Among Deaf Individuals
Resilience in the face of trauma is an important yet elusive construct in human development. While there are prevalent data suggesting high rates of trauma among deaf individuals, valuable insight on how resilience evolves among deaf individuals within the context of trauma has yet to be explored sufficiently. This study explored the concept of resilience through semi-structured interviews with a total of 19 experienced mental health providers. U…
They Look Back
There are as many different genitaliaas there are stars in the sky. There are as many different transgender genitalia asthere are birds that fly. Some are round, some are long, some are square, some have wings, yes, some do.Ours like to dress up, speak up, and look at you.In reverence. And irreverence. In celebration.Towards a world in which we support, cherish, and celebrate all bodies, especially our own.(—Trannymal)Premiering in 2006, Trannymal is th…
Safeguarding the atom
There was more than one response to the nuclear age. Countering well-documented attitudes of protest and pessimism, Muriel Howorth (1886–1971) models a less examined strain of atomic enthusiasm in British nuclear culture. Believing that the same power within the atomic bomb could be harnessed to make the world a ‘smiling garden of Eden’, she utilized traditionally feminine domains of kitchen and garden in her efforts to educate the public about t…
Pain Catastrophizing in Patients with Noncardiac Chest Pain
OBJECTIVE: To examine the contributions of chest pain, anxiety, and pain catastrophizing to disability in 97 patients with noncardiac chest pain (NCCP) and to test whether chest pain and anxiety were related indirectly to greater disability via pain catastrophizing. METHODS: Participants completed daily diaries measuring chest pain for 7 days before completing measures of pain catastrophizing, trait anxiety, and disability. Linear path model anal…
