Sailing and Social Class
This book explores the sociology of sailing and yachting. Drawing on original research, and employing a theoretical framework based on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, the book argues that sailing is, still, an upper-middle-class activity that has much to tell us about the wider sociology of leisure and sport. Research in cultural studies from the 1970s attempted to develop a class analysis of youth subcultures. This led to the criticism that most teens are not members of subcu…

It takes as examples contemporary punk as it exists in four cities and shows that there are different local accents in Washington D.C., Austin, Texas, Toronto and Mexico City. The conclusion describes some aspects of the social organisation of cultural contacts between these sce…

This article describes the writer's involvement in a non-profit, volunteer-run punk storefront in Toronto. Keywords: Cultural StudiesAnarchismPunkGender
The emergence of cultural studies in Latin America
This article provides an overview of work on cultural studies in Latin America, which is virtually unknown outside the continent and has only recently begun to be translated into English. The article concludes that this new work often seems to be less politically engaged than Latin American critical communications research of the 1970s
