Paula de Eguiluz, Seventeenth-Century Puerto Rico, Cuba, and New Granada (Colombia)
Paula de Eguiluz, the daughter of African slaves in Puerto Rico in the 1590s, achieved her freedom from slavery by age thirty. However, from the 1620s to the end of the 1630s, she fought a contentious, ongoing battle with the inquisitors working out of the Cartagena de Indias tribunal of the Spanish Holy Office. Eguiluz gave numerous testimonies to the inquisitors, which hostile and friendly witnesses filled in from their own experiences with her…

Urban Slavery in Colonial Mexico
Pablo Miguel Sierra Silva’s study of slavery and freedom in seventeenth-century Puebla de los Ángeles is an important new contribution to the history of African-descent lives in New Spain. Profit and Passion
This book recounts four centuries of the history of women labeled public women, whores, and prostitutes in New Spain’s archival records and works of literature from Spain and Mexico. Performing conventional gender roles, women resisted the archival inscription of these labels, so this complex story of multi-layered viceregal sex work acknowledges the ambiguities and limitations of documenting the history of sexuality via written sources. The elus…

The Very Nature of God
Sexuality, Witchcraft, and Honor in Colonial Spanish America
Scholarship on colonial Spanish American sexuality has focused on the literary discourse of honor, institutional regulation, and imperial control.
