Globalism, Localism and Identity: New Perspectives on the Transition of Sustainability
A Quantitative Test of the Cultural Theory of Risk Perceptions: Comparison with the Psychometric Paradigm
This paper seeks to compare two frameworks which have been proposed to explain risk perceptions, namely, cultural theory and the psychometric paradigm. A structured questionnaire which incorporated elements from both approaches was administered to 129 residents of Norwich, England. The qualitative risk characteristics generated by the psychometric paradigm explained a far greater proportion of the variance in risk perceptions than cultural biases…

Environmental Politics in the 1980s: The Public Examination of Radioactive Waste Disposal
A focus of concentration in UK environmental politics during the mid 1980s was undoubtedly the proposal by the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) to construct the first American-style Pressurised Water Reactor nuclear power station (PWR) at Sizewell in Suffolk (Energy Policy, 1984). This proposal became the subject of the longest running and most expensive public inquiry in British administrative history. The Sizewell B Inquiry, the tota…

The Sizewell B Inquiry and a National Energy Strategy
MY PURPOSE IN this lecture is to examine the relationship between the proposal by the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) to build Britain's first pressurized water nuclear reactor (PWR) at Sizewell on the Suffolk coast and the stated energy policies of successive governments, especially the present administration. The CEGB's proposal is currently being subjected to a lengthy and penetrating public inquiry which is unlikely to be conclude…

Environmental Impact Assessment in the Context of Economic Recession
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT analysis (EIA) seems to be generally accepted in current land-use thought as a 'good thing'. Our environment, social and physical, the future for generations yet to come, is under threat throughout the world. Urban sprawl is common and seemingly cannot be contained in the face of the ever swelling tide of population increase. Many of our fauna and flora are endangered; the wet lands are drying, our moorlands are being put und…

Spray Irrigation and the Water Resources Act, 1963
The Water Resources Act (I963) in England and Wales has brought about some valuable innovations in the field of water-resource management. Among them the charging scheme is particularly challenging, for it attempts to assess the effect of each abstraction upon the general water resource and upon other legitimate users. The purpose of this article is to assess the charging scheme as a management tool, and to appraise in particular the manner in wh…
