Women of many “firsts”
There is a significant scholarship on media framing of women politicians in the context of western liberal democracies. However, much less academic attention has been directed at an intersectional analysis of the interface of race/ethnicity and gender media framing of ethnic minority women politicians (EWPs). This article undertakes a comparative analysis of mainstream and ethnic news media’s framing of EWPs in Aotearoa New Zealand (AoNZ) in term…
An intersectional approach to media coverage of politics in New Zealand
This study analyses media coverage of two Māori women politicians in Aotearoa New Zealand. This article adopts an intersectional lens to critically examine the discriminatory ideologies at play in mainstream New Zealand media coverage of Metiria Turei and Paula Bennett. The analysis reveals that although the coverage examined in this article presents the Māori heritage of the two women very differently, the coverage pays close attention to both w…
Testing the Applicability of the Instructional Beliefs Model across Three Countries
Instructional communication research is critiqued for lacking theoretical development and limited cultural understanding. This study tested the instructional beliefs model (IBM) in three countries: US, Turkey, and Finland. Participants (N = 376) reported perceptions of teacher relevance, state motivation, procedural justice, learner empowerment, and revised learning indicators. Results revealed that the IBM provided a good fit to the data in Turk…
A baby bump for women’s rights”
Very few studies have examined discourses about Heads of State who have been pregnant whilst in office. In January 2018, Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of Aotearoa New Zealand, announced her pregnancy and intention of taking six weeks of maternity leave, which sparked national and international interest. This study analyses the coverage of Ardern’s pregnancy and contributes to literature on representations of female politicians. A thematic analys…

A Longitudinal Examination of Validity and Temporal Stability of Organizational Dissent Measurement in France
This study examines the extent to which the Organizational Dissent Scale (ODS) maintains validity and temporal stability over time in a French sample. A longitudinal panel study was conducted. The results do not support that the ODS maintains validity nor temporal stability over time. These results are not indicative of problems with the original measure; it could be that conceptually dissent is a different process with different understandings i…
Media Coverage of Rachida Dati and Najat Vallaud-Belkacem
This article examines the discursive representations of two ethnically diverse French women political figures, Rachida Dati and Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, to illuminate the operation of discriminatory ideologies in French Newspapers Le Monde and Le Figaro. To complement thematic analysis and feminist critical discourse analysis, this article applies an intersectional lens throughout. In line with previous research, the study shows that both newspape…
A multi-national validity analysis of the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA-24)
Methodological issues abound when conducting cross-cultural research. In this manuscript we discuss three methodological issues present in many cross-cultural communication studies: lack of geographic diversity, reliability, and validity. To explore these issues the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA-24) is assessed. The PRCA-24 serves as an exemplar of a US-designed and -validated measure frequently used outside the US without t…
A multi-national validity analysis of the self-perceived communication competence scale
The self-perceived communication competence (SPCC) measure has been used in over 50 published studies since 2000. McCroskey and McCroskey (1988. Self-report as an approach to measuring communication competence. Communication Research Reports, 5, 108–113. doi: 10.1080/08824098809359810) developed the measure to be used within the US college/university classroom. Despite its intended use, the measure is frequently used outside of the US and outside…
Men and women in positions of responsibility - A qualitative analysis of organizational readiness in France and Finland
This paper examines whether male and female managers hold different opinion on women in managerial and higher level positions, depending on their different cultural background. Furthermore, the paper deals with managers’ perception of organizational readiness to accept women in managerial positions. The paper is looking at this aspect from a cultural perspective, by comparing France to Finland. The research is based on 16 interviews, 9 from Franc…
Host Culture Acceptance, Religiosity, and the Threat of Muslim Immigration An Integrated Threat Analysis in Spain
This study explores the intricate relationships between a dominant group’s fear of an immigrant group, religiosity, and the dominant culture’s perception of if an immigrant group is motivated to culturally adapt. Specifically, Muslim immigration to Spain was analyzed. The study found the following: 1) threat from an immigrant group was negatively correlated with perception of immigrant motivation to adapt, 2) highly religious members of the domin…
