Educational Mobility and the Gendered Geography of Cultural Capital
International student mobility from East to West has grown rapidly as the middle classes have sought to reproduce their advantage in the context of changing socioeconomic circumstances. Existing research shows that middle-class students and their parents are increasingly using overseas educational qualifications-an institutionalised form of cultural capital-to ensure that they stand out in the competition for lucrative employment. This paper make…

The dynamics and characteristics of aeolian dust in dryland Central Asia
The drying up of the Aral Sea has been described as one of the most staggering environmental disasters of the twentieth century. Over the last 40 years over 36 000 km2 of the former seabed have been exposed, creating a potentially significant aeolian dust source. It is widely believed, but little researched, that increased dust storm activity in the region has had a major impact on human health. In this paper we report the findings of a study int…
Irrigation and Water Management in Turkmenistan
FOR THE FORMER SOVIET REPUBLIC OF TURKMENISTAN agriculture is the single most important economic activity in that more than 40% of the population is directly in its employ. For a greater number of people it represents a major secondary income source, which in the economic crisis of the post-independence period has assumed even greater significance. With agriculture in Turkmenistan being almost totally dependent on irrigation, access to water is e…
Degradation, Drought, and Dissent
Environmental degradation of the central Mexican highlands has traditionally been attributed to colonial land-use change, specifically the introduction of livestock and the use of the plow. Some investigations, however, suggest that the Spanish encountered an already modified or degraded landscape in many locations, and as such, the environmental impacts of Spanish colonization have been overstated. In this paper, we present evidence as to the po…
Development and Environmental Significance of an Eolian Sand Ramp of Last-Glacial Age, Central Iran
A 25-m-thick section of mostly eolian sediment is exposed in the stream-cut flank of a sand ramp accumulated in a mountain saddle near Ardakan playa, central Iran. The well-sorted eolian sediments of the ramp contain talus beds and incipient paleosols. Morphology and bedding structures imply that southeasterly winds were primarily responsible for deposition of the eolian sand. Optical dating shows that the sand was deposited near the last glacial…
The climate of Mexico since the Aztec period
Conflicts Over Water in 'The Little Drought Age' in Central Mexico
Mexico represents one of the most climatically sensitive regions of the world. Over the Colonial period, prolonged drought episodes had severe impacts on all sectors of society, particularly indigenous rural populations. This paper employs a variety of colonial historical records to document the nature and extent of these impacts within the context of prevailing social, political and economic conditions. It is clear that access to water has long …
A Plague of Sheep
Reconstructing the climate of Mexico from historical records
There is a growing number of studies that use historical sources to reconstruct recent environmental change. In Mexico there are abundant sources of information that can be used to determine variations in the climate over the historical period. In this paper we draw together information from a variety of primary and secondary historical sources to reconstruct fluctuations in the climate of central Mexico over the last 600 years. The Aztecs are be…
