  • Reframing Asinara

    Open Access•Elena Dell’agnese, E Dell'Agnese•ARTICLE•Shima•2024

Like many other islands in the Mediterranean, Asinara, located to the north of Sardinia, has been a prison island for a long time. Unlike other islands, however, which often housed other forms of use and activities together with their prisons, Asinara was emptied of its population and used solely as a detention centre for more than a century. It was first an agricultural penal colony and a quarantine station for maritime travellers, then a concen…

Popular music has not yet been widely considered by popular geopolitics practitioners. This paper develops such a perspective, using the US–Mexico border as a case study. In the area, the classic corrido and the more recent narcocorridos are flourishing. Their lyrics, exalting the deeds of border trespassers, usually represent the border as a superimposed boundary. Around the border, other more hybrid kinds of music stand for a very mixed borderl…

  • Mapping the political geographies of Europeanization

Open Access•Sami Moisio, Veit Bachmann et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in Human Geography•2013•Cited by: 38•References: 40

Political geographers have significantly contributed to understandings of the spatialities of Europeanization. We review some of this work, while also highlighting research themes where further political-geographic research would be insightful. We note the importance of work that captures both the diverse expressions and meanings attributed to Europe, European integration and ‘European power’ in different places within and beyond the EU, and the …

  • Catastrophic Geo-Graphies? An Afterword

    Open Access•Elena Dell''Agnese, E Dell'Agnese et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•2013•References: 5

Writing about is not easy. But it can also be very significant, at different levels and with different implications. If, in mathematical terms, a catastrophe is a sudden shift, in sociological terms, expression may be used to imply a rupture of system of normal relations, caused by a unexpected event--in this case, a disaster. A catastrophe involves destruction of everyday ordinariness, that is to say, of usual space-time envelope, exposing react…

  • The US-Mexico Border in American Movies

    Elena Dell''Agnese, E Dell'Agnese et al.•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2005•Cited by: 5

The region surrounding the US–Mexico divide is probably one of the most frequently screened landscapes of North America. Since the beginning of commercial cinema, the border has been a leading or secondary character in dozens of movies, ranging from the obvious westerns to the less obvious horror, science fiction and film-noir categories. The connotations given by the American film industry to the cross-border experience – both from the south and…
