Misuse of Evidence in Sex and Gender Policy
Sex and gender policy has become a battleground for attacks on science and expertise. As researchers committed to rigorous evaluation of evidence, the authors examine how evidence is used and misused in debates on sex and gender policy affecting transgender people. Drawing on examples from healthcare, prison housing, and sport, they identify recurring pitfalls: elevating opinion as evidence, excluding trans expertise, discrediting scientific cons…
Aging bodies, future technologies: Health insurance coverage and stratified biomedicalization
(Trans)National Gender Expertise and the Politics of Recognition
International nongovernmental organizations (INGOs) require a global rights category around which they can make claims. But, social category systems vary across context. How do INGOs articulate a global transgender rights category amid rapidly shifting political landscapes? Drawing from interviews, participant observation, and expert reports published between 1990 and 2019, I show how the gender experts who staff INGOs used a variety of recogniti…
Thinking Like a Feminist: What Feminist Theory Has to Offer Sociology
What does feminist theory have to offer sociology? Defining feminist theory as work that problematizes the gender binary and the relations of domination that constitute and emerge from it, we explore four key aspects of feminist scholarship. We begin with work that explores gender as a structuring trope. We then turn to how gender is coconstituted with other structures of power and domination. Next, we survey how feminists have theorized the rela…
Elaborating Embodied Boundaries: Medical Expertise and (Trans)Gender Classification
As coverage for gender-affirming surgery and hormone therapy has expanded over the past two decades, insurers are increasingly tasked with deciding which body modifications are necessary for accomplishing masculinity and femininity. Drawing from extensive records on coverage decisions and national health insurance plans, the author investigates how insurers marshal gender categories to make decisions about medically necessary care. While insurers…
Seeking Friends in Troubled Times: The Structure and Dynamics of Transnational LGBT Networks in Europe
Prior research demonstrates the importance of domestic associations joining transnational advocacy networks to create social change. Few studies, however, investigate how dynamic political opportunities influence the structure of crossnational networks. To address this gap, we analyze an original dataset of 3,103 domestic lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) associations in Europe connected through joint membership in 46 LGBT internatio…
Transnational Diffusion and Regional Resistance: Domestic LGBT Association Founding, 1979–2009
In recent decades, scholars of world cultural diffusion have begun to examine the structure of the world society itself, finding evidence of regionalization within the network of international nongovernmental organizations (INGOs). There is little research, however, on how the structure of world society shapes processes of transnational diffusion. In this paper, I propose that the regionalization of world society, measured through INGO membership…
Gender Identity, the Sexed Body, and the Medical Making of Transgender
In this article, I argue that the medical conceptualization of gender identity in the United States has entered a 'new regime of truth.' Drawing from a mixed-methods analysis of medical journals, I illuminate a shift in the locus of gender identity from external genitalia and pathologization of families to genes and brain structure and individualized self-conception. The sexed body itself has also undergone a transformation: Sex no longer resides…
