Beyond the Language Classroom
Alison d'Anglejan, Gisele Painchaud, Claude Renaud, Beyond the Language Classroom: A Study of Communicative Abilities in Adult Immigrants Following Intensive Instruction, TESOL Quarterly, Vol. 20, No. 2 (Jun., 1986), pp. 185-205
Multilingualism in the Canadian Context
One of the most salient characteristics of the Canadian federation is its linguistic, cultural, and geographic diversity. The second largest country in the world, Canada's population of 24,343,180 (Statistics Canada 1981) is irregularly dispersed, with enclaves of high density in the industrial areas along the United States border and vast sparsely inhabited areas in the central prairies and northern regions. These geographic facts, coupled with …
Learner Characteristics and Second Language Acquisition
The study examined the relationship between learner characteristics and achievement in French as a second language in a sample of 391 adult immigrants completing a 900‐hour course of classroom instruction in Montreal. A multivariate analysis of variance was used to assess the relative contribution of nine learner variables to individual differences in performance on an FSL achievement test. Teachers' evaluations of subjects as “good learners” or …
Language, cognition, and second language grammaticality judgments
Elicitation of Inter-english1
This paper advances and argues for the claim that the nature and structure of interlanguage cannot be properly understood without reference to the intuitions that language learners have about the grammaticality of their own production. We show that interlanguage speakers do not necessarily accept structures they commonly produce and argue that any reasonable account of interlanguage must reflect the difference between acceptable and unacceptable …
An Overview of Language-in-Education Policy Making
Such are the vicissitudes of economics, politics, and Acts of God, that the provision of appropriate schooling for disparate refugee or migrant populations presents an enduring challenge for educators and policy–makers. The challenge is not a new one in that large scale migrations of people have been taking place since the earliest times in recorded history. However, it is heightened in today's world by our recongnition of the critical role which…
The Acquisition of Complex English Structures by Adult Learners1
This study was designed to investigate the acquisition of a set of complex English structures by adult learners of English at two different levels of proficiency. The results indicated a developmental pattern similar to that reported by Chomsky for child native speakers. Interesting language learning strategies were revealed. In interpreting ambiguous sentences, beginners tended to rely on semantic rather than on syntactic information. All subjec…
