Counting question 20 on the 1870 census, the denial of the right to vote
Question 20 on the 1870 US Census asked respondents if they had been denied the right to vote. The Census Office told Congress in 1871 that 40, 800 men answered yes to the question. The Minnesota Population Center (MPC) one percent sample of the 1870 entries projected 29, 900 affirmative answers. By contrast, Ancestry.com counted more than 125, 000 ‘yes’ answers. In May 1910, the New York Times published an article about an arranged marriage between two migrants from Austria-Hungary. “Hastens to Marry His Mother's Choice” was written as more than a charming story of love at first sight. Indeed, the reporter considered the love story an example of near instant assimilation of migrants into American culture. A deeper investigation of the life stories of the couple shows that they did understand some things …
Julius Drachsler's Intermarriage in New York City
Julius Drachsler's 1921 book, Intermarriage in New York City, examined 171,356 individual marriage license applications from New York City in the years 1908–12. The author found little intermarriage across social lines among immigrants but a considerable amount among their U.S.-born children. Westward Who? Estimates of Native White Interstate Migration After the War of 1812
Estimates of interstate migration after 1815 and before 1860 for white, U.S.-born adults are presented. The estimates come from a sample of military bounty land warrant recipients who served in the War of 1812 and show that a majority of veterans spent their adult lives in the same state. The limited amount of interstate movement did conform to traditional descriptions of an east-west pattern. I also consider the social basis for interstate migra…
