Metagenre in Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained
The concept of metagenre in literature has become an increasingly helpful interpretive tool by which to analyze and understand various pieces of literature in relationship to their particular genres. A metageneric examination of Milton’s Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, both in relation to the Homeric epics and in relation to each other, allows readers to understand that Milton’s celebration of “Patience and Heroic Martyrdom” (Paradise Lost 9…
Slender Self-Knowledge
This essay argues that King Lear’s tragedy is largely brought about by Lear’s lack of self-knowledge, a character defect that long precedes the foolish decisions he makes in King Lear’s opening scene and which precipitates his own death and the deaths of those he loves. Lear’s lack of self-knowledge encourages Shakespeare’s audience to have sympathy for Goneril and Regan and to recognize that Lear’s beautiful progress of redemption is mitigated b…

Nora's Ironic Longing for Christlike Love
This essay argues that in Ibsen's A Doll House, both Nora and her husband, Torvald Helmer, exhibit a "religion of Torvald" characterized by their respective devotion to Torvald himself. However, while Torvald's devotion to himself is characterized by self-love and self-centeredness, Nora's "religion of Torvald" is based on her expectation that Torvald will exhibit the Christlike office of bearing Nora's sins by proclaiming himself guilty of her c…

Prospero, the Divine Shepherd, and Providence
In this essay, I argue that Psalm 23 serves as a thematic rubric through which to understand how Prospero's machinations affect the progress of the redemption of King Alonso throughout the play. At the same time, however, recognizing Prospero's moral complexities and deficiencies, I also argue that Prospero's mercy toward and reconciliation with Alonso ultimately demonstrates the sovereign influence of a Providence beyond Prospero's control-a Pro…
Ignatian Inscape and Instress in Gerard Manley Hopkins's "Pied Beauty," "God's Grandeur," "The Starlight Night," and "The Windhover
This essay discusses Gerard Manley Hopkin's notions of inscape and instress, examining their early expressions during Hopkins's time as a student at and recent alumnus of Balliol College, Oxford, their subsequent development amid Hopkins's career as a Jesuit novice and priest, and their manifestation in four sonnets composed in 1877. Attention is paid throughout to the likely influence of Hopkins's Balliol tutor, Walter Pater, as well as the infl…
