  • Liberalism as a Way of Life

    Daniel A Dombrowski•ARTICLE•American Journal of Theology &…•2025

There are two main heroes in this book, which is written by a well-known Australian political philosopher. One of these is the most influential political philosopher of the twentieth century, John Rawls, who distinguishes between at least two different sorts of liberalism. Political liberalism is the more modest of the two in that it deals specifically with political philosophy and the concept of justice, leaving aside people's comprehensive doct…

  • Prolegomena to the Concept of God When Dealing with the Question

    Open Access•Daniel A Dombrowski•ARTICLE•Religions•2025•References: 12

This article examines the assumption that, in order to respond adequately to the question in the title, one must have the classical concept of God in mind. Classical theism is criticized and neoclassical/process theism is briefly defended. Specifically, the classical theistic attribute of omnipotence receives four criticisms. The hope is that these criticisms prepare the way for a more fruitful response to the question in the title than is possib…

  • John Burt's Lincoln and Process Thought

    Open Access•Daniel A Dombrowski•ARTICLE•Religions•2024•References: 7

The purpose of the present article is to examine the processual character of Abraham Lincoln's politically liberal thought. This examination will attempt to build on the magisterial study of Lincoln by John Burt and on Burt's use of the thought of John Rawls and H. L. A. Hart. Lincoln will also be compared and contrasted with process thinkers like Charles Hartshorne and Alfred North Whitehead, especially in terms of Lincoln's capacity for growth …

  • Living with Animals

    Daniel A Dombrowski•ARTICLE•Journal of Animal Ethics•2022

This book is a detailed view of animal ethics based on two intellectual sources: pragmatism (primarily John Dewey and Charles Sanders Peirce, but also Jane Addams and Alaine Locke) and ecofeminism (also ecowomanism, which emphasizes the insights of women of color). One of the chief virtues of the book is the emphasis placed on negotiating provisional responses to issues regarding animals in the midst of competing claims, in pragmatist fashion. Th…

  • Neoclassical Theism as Inherently Dialogical

    Open Access•Daniel A Dombrowski•ARTICLE•Religions•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The position usually called "process theism" is seldom called this by one of its most important defenders, Charles Hartshorne. The label he typically uses is "neoclassical theism". It is important to notice that these two designations are not equivalent. To speak of process theism is to accentuate the differences between this metaphysical view and an opposing metaphysical stance, that of traditional or substantialist theism. By way of contrast, t…

  • Pre-Liberal Political Philosophy

    Daniel A Dombrowski•BOOK•Pre-Liberal Political Philosophy•2022

John Rawls is the most influential 20th century political philosopher, but critics have complained about the ahistorical character of his approach. The purpose of this book is to argue that these critics are, at best, only half correct.Pre-Liberal Political Philosophy concentrates on four pre-liberal thinkers who are major figures in the history of philosophy and who are surprisingly formative in the development of Rawls's mature political philos…

    Open Access•Daniel A Dombrowski•BOOK•Process Philosophy and Political…•2019•Cited by: 3

In this work two key theses are defended: political liberalism is a processual (rather than a static) view and process thinkers should be political liberals. Three major figures are considered (Rawls, Whitehead, Hartshorne) in the effort to show the superiority of political liberalism to its illiberal alternatives on the political right and left. Further, a politically liberal stance regarding nonhuman animals and the environment is articulated. …

  • Rawlsian Explorations in Religion and Applied Philosophy

    Daniel A Dombrowski•BOOK•Rawlsian Explorations in Religion…•2015

To probe the underlying premises of a liberal political order, John Rawls felt obliged to use a philosophical method that abstracted from many of the details of ordinary life. But this very abstraction became a point of criticism, as it left unclear the implications of his theory for public policies and life in the real political world. Rawlsian Explorations in Religion and Applied Philosophy attempts to ferret out those implications, filling the…

  • Are Nonhuman Animals Persons? A Process Theistic Response

    Daniel A Dombrowski•ARTICLE•Journal of Animal Ethics•2015

In this article I defend the claim that nonhuman animals can be persons. In this regard I rely on the thought of neoclassical or process theists like Alfred North Whitehead and Charles Hartshorne. Their moderate stance regarding personhood is in contrast to the influential classical theistic view, which denies personhood status to nonhuman animals

  • Philosophical Vegetarianism and Animal Entitlements

Daniel A Dombrowski, Gordon Lindsay Campbell•BOOK•The Oxford Handbook of Animals in…•2014

This chapter explores the philosophical arguments in the ancient world both for and against the vegetarian position. It discusses how a belief about a Golden Age of vegetarianism provided the background for more philosophical and argumentative versions of vegetarianism that appeared over the centuries in ancient Greece and Rome. It analyses the relevant views and arguments of several ancient philosophers, including Pythagoras, who was considered …

  • On the Alleged Truth About Lies in Plato’s Republic

    Daniel A Dombrowski•ARTICLE•Polis The Journal for Ancient…•2004

The purpose of the present article is to explicate and criticize the most detailed philosophical appreciation of the ‘noble’ and other lies in Plato on a Straussian basis: Carl Page’s instructive 1991 article titled ‘The Truth about Lies in Plato’s Republic’. I carefully summarize and criticize Page’s sober, scholarly approach to the subject matter in question. Ultimately I reject his attempt to justify the ‘noble’ and other lies told by both Pla…

  • Vegetarianism and the Argument from Marginal Cases in Porphyry

Daniel A Dombrowski•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of Ideas•1984

It is well known that many of the philosophers from antiquity were vegetarian: Pythagoras, Empedocles, Theophrastus, Seneca, Ovid, Plutarch, Plotinus, Porphyry, and others.1 And Plato, although apparently not a vegetarian, was nonetheless greatly impressed by vegetarian thought.2 What is not so well known by classicists is that there has been a rebirth in philosophical vegetarianism in the last decade that has generated an enormous debate of at l…

  • On Taking Polytheism Seriously

    Daniel A Dombrowski•ARTICLE•Buddhist-Christian Studies•1994

In this article I am not so much out to prove anything as to explore in a preliminary way the importance of polytheism for any adequate contemporary philosophical or theological anthropology. This exploration will largely consist in an engagement with the thought of Stephen R. L. Clark, an Anglican philosopher who nonetheless defends a qualified version of polytheistic Neoplatonism. Eventually we will see the benefits of taking polytheism serious…

  • The politics of ethology

    Daniel A Dombrowski•ARTICLE•Critical Review•1994•References: 1

While the academic discussion of gender and family issues often adopts the contractarian and consensual approach of liberalism, the work of Stephen R. L. Clark provides an interesting contrast. Clark turns to ethology as a guide to modes of social existence congruent with our evolutionary nature. Although an Aristotelian, Clark is not a sexist in arguing that household life is more important than what moderns call “political” life. Clark is prema…
