Seeking a Role? The United Kingdom, 1951-1970
The West Lothian Question
Devolution was seen as a solution to the perceived lack of legitimacy of British government in the non-English parts of the UK. It has potentially transferred the legitimacy question to England, particularly when that UK government is dependent upon the votes of Scottish MPs. The various responses—an English Parliament, English Votes for English Laws, and English regional assemblies—will not work. Asymmetrical devolution could, however, prove per…
The Guardsmen
The Guardsmen, a masterly contribution to contemporary history, is a collective biography of four Conservative politicians—Harold Macmillan, Lord Salisbury, Oliver Lyttleton and Harry Crookshank—all of whom arrived at Eton in 1906, served in the same battalion of the Grenadier Guards in 1914, entered Churchill's wartime coalition in 1940, and his peacetime Cabinet in 1951. ‘The history of a political generation seen from within reveals the true w…

Debating Nationhood and Governance in Britain, 1885-1939 * Reinventing Britain
It has become a commonplace to suggest that the period since 1997 has been an era of constitutional reform–devolution, House of Lords reform, the Human Rights Act, the Freedom of Information Act and so on. ‘In the last nine years’, declares Andrew McDonald, the editor of Reinventing Britain, ‘we have seen the institutional architecture of the state remodelled and the relationship between citizen and state refashioned’. Indeed, it is no exaggerati…
A History of the Liberal Party in the Twentieth Century
The main thing wrong with this book is confusion about the title. On the cover, it is called A History of the Liberal Party. On the title-page it is called A History of the Liberal Party in the Twentieth Century. The latter is the accurate title. The book itself is marked by no such confusion. It is by far the most reliable history of the modern Liberal Party, and it will become a staple of undergraduate reading lists. Its only serious competitor…
