Behavioral Practice and Homework Completion as Predictors of Outcome in a Transdiagnostic Brief Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety and Depression in Youth
Exposure and behavioral activation are key to youth anxiety/depression monotherapy. • These behavioral components, in- and out-of-session, are the focus of this study. • More in-session behavioral practice predicted improvement in functioning. • Greater homework completion predicted improvements in anxiety symptoms. • Behavioral practice in and out of session seems key in transdiagnostic treatment. Exposure and behavioral activation have been ide…
Early indicators of response to transdiagnostic treatment of pediatric anxiety and depression
Background Pediatric anxiety and depression are prevalent, impairing, and highly comorbid. Available evidence‐based treatments have an average response rate of 60%. One path to increasing response may be to identify likely non‐responders midway through treatment to adjust course prior to completing an episode of care. The aims of this study, thus, were to identify predictors of post‐intervention response assessing (a) mid‐treatment symptom severi…
What five decades of research tells us about the effects of youth psychological therapy
Parenting behaviors of anxious mothers and youth internalizing symptoms
This pilot study examined youth report (ages 7 to 15) of maternal parenting behaviors (Psychological Control and Acceptance) and their association with internalizing symptoms in the children of clinically anxious non-Hispanic white and Latina mothers (N = 28). Compared to non-Hispanic white mothers, Latina mothers were rated by their children as higher in Psychological Control; a significant group difference in maternal Acceptance was not detecte…
Comorbidity of anxiety and depression in youth
The high level of concurrent and sequential comorbidity between anxiety and depression in children and adolescents may result from (a) substantial overlap in both the symptoms and items used to assess these putatively different disorders, (b) common etiological factors (e.g., familial risk, negative affectivity, information processing biases, neural substrates) implicated in the development of each condition, and (c) negative sequelae of anxiety …
The Judge Specificity of Evaluations of Youth Social Behavior
Increasingly, theorists have suggested that social competence is an evaluative construct that will vary as a function of who is judging behavior. This study examined how two key groups in children's social environments—peers (N = 663, age range = 10.83–15.25 years) and teachers (N = 49)—rated the effectiveness of different behaviors generated by youth in response to physical, verbal, and relational provocation by peers. Results indicated that you…
Jousting With Straw Men
Empirically supported treatments (ESTs) do not cure every patient, and the randomized trial is not a flawless methodology. Upon these often-noted and widely accepted points, D. Westen, C. M. Novotny, and H. Thompson-Brenner (2004a; see record 2004-15935-005) built a critique of ESTs and EST research. However, important work developing effective, clinically relevant treatments for serious problems was omitted from the Westen et al. (2004a) review.…
