  • Grammar and grammaticalization in Zapotec

    Natalie Operstein•ARTICLE•Language Typology and Universals•2024

The present study contributes to the empirical basis of grammaticalization theory by presenting a grammaticalization profile of Zapotec, a language family of Mesoamerica. The discussion centers around co-grammaticalization of lexemes and constructions, polygrammaticalization, interdependence between syntactic and prosodic conditioning of grammaticalization, and mutual feedback between grammaticalization and morphosyntactic typology

  • Lingua Franca between pidginization and koineization

Natalie Operstein•ARTICLE•Journal of Pidgin and Creole…•2018

Published literature on Lingua Franca contains divergent views regarding its place in the taxonomy of contact language types. While this language is traditionally regarded as a pidgin, some scholars consider it more accurate to view it as a koine. This paper shows that Lingua Franca exhibits features that are consistent with both pidginization and koineization, and proposes to view it as located on the pidgin/koine continuum

  • Phonological Adaptation of Spanish Loanwords in Zaniza Zapotec

    Natalie Operstein•ARTICLE•International Journal of American…•2016•References: 12

In his work on the acculturation of the Nahuas to Spanish presence, Lockhart identified three clearly defined chronological stages, hypothesizing that these stages may “represent a universal aspect of the contact of cultures, at least on the indigenous side of large-scale conquests or intrusions” (1997:35). Lockhart’s research provides a useful framework for conceptualizing indigenous-Spanish language contact in Mesoamerica, and the purpose of th…

  • Origin of the Zapotec Causative Marker*k

    Natalie Operstein•ARTICLE•International Journal of American…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This paper uses synchronic and diachronic typological data to trace the origin and development of the Zapotec causative marker *k-. It is suggested that the causative marker *k- arose as a language-internal innovation after Zapotec split away from its sister branch, Chatino. The paper relies on Song's (1996) typology of causative marker formation to show that the causative prefix *k- has developed out of the marker of the potential mood following…
