A quantitative and qualitative analysis of syntactic variation in Dutch dialects
This is an accepted article with a DOI pre-assigned that is not yet published. This paper aims to provide a parametric account of a set of morphosyntactic variation data from Dutch dialects. The analysis proceeds in two steps: first, the raw data are fed into a number of exploratory statistical techniques so as to be able to discern the main patterns and tendencies, and in a second step the outcome of the quantitative analysis is analyzed from a f…
Pronominal Gender in Dutch: Apparent-Time Change in Lexical versus Semantic Agreement
This article discusses pronominal gender agreement in Dutch. Based on a sentence completion task filled out by about 10,000 speakers, we provide evidence for the claim that there is an ongoing shift from lexical to semantic agreement in Dutch, even in a formal register. Results of correspondence and cluster analyses indicate that nouns with the same degree of individuation group together. Furthermore, the analyses reveal an age effect, with three…
Inflected imperatives in Dutch dialects
This paper investigates a striking agreement phenomenon in several Hollandic dialects of Dutch. In these dialects, imperatives of Exceptional Case Marking (ECM) verbs (such as kijken ‘look’ and horen ‘hear’) show number agreement with the subject of their embedded infinitival clause, an agreement pattern not attested in Standard Dutch. We refer to such constructions as ‘inflected imperatives’. We argue that in these cases the imperative verb lack…
Sloppy symmetry under ellipsis
This paper focuses on the behavior of symmetric predicates under ellipsis. Building on Stockwell (Stockwell, Richard. 2020. Contrast and verb phrase ellipsis: Triviality, symmetry, and competition . UCLA. Doctoral Dissertation), we examine the phenomenon of participant and transitivity switching under VP-ellipsis, which symmetric predicates permit but non-symmetric ones do not. While Stockwell takes this as evidence for a semantic identity condit…

A quantitative-theoretical analysis of syntactic microvariation: Word order in Dutch verb clusters
This article is a case study in how quantitative-statistical and formal-theoretical (generative) approaches to language variation can be combined. We provide a quantitative analysis of word-order variation in verb clusters in 185 dialects of Dutch and map the results of that analysis against linguistic parameters extracted from the theoretical literature on verb clusters. Based on this novel methodology, we argue that verb cluster ordering in Dut…

The Oxford Handbook of Ellipsis
This handbook is the first volume to provide a comprehensive, in-depth, and balanced discussion of ellipsis phenomena, whereby a perceived interpretation is fuller than would be expected based solely on the presence of linguistic forms. Natural language abounds in these apparently incomplete expressions, such as I laughed but Ed didn’t, in which the final portion of the sentence, the verb ‘laugh’, remains unpronounced but is still understood. The…
Oxford Handbook of Ellipsis
This handbook is the first volume to provide a comprehensive, in-depth, and balanced discussion of ellipsis, a phenomena whereby expressions in natural language appear to be incomplete but are still understood. It explores fundamental questions about the workings of grammar and provides detailed case studies of inter- and intralinguistic variation.
VP‐Ellipsis
VP‐ellipsis (VPE) refers to the phenomenon whereby the main predicate of the clause – typically in combination with its internal arguments – is missing. VPE has drawn the interest of generative syntacticians from the very early days onward and continues to be a thriving subfield of the theoretical literature on ellipsis to this day. This SynCom Case highlights the most important theoretical questions and accompanying data surrounding VPE. It appr…
How (Not) to Elide Negation
This paper examines the behavior of English negative indefinites under VP ellipsis. The main empirical observation is that negative indefinites cannot take scope out of a verbal ellipsis site. We propose that negative indefinites involve fusion under adjacency between the clausal polarity head and an indefinite determiner and that this adjacency comes about under multidominance. Multidominance can feed the morphological coalescence of two syntact…
How to Merge a Root
The main goal of this article is to show that four properties of roots can be derived in a principled manner from the theory of Merge. The properties in question are the following: (a) roots have no grammatical features, (b) roots have no syntactic category, (c) roots are defined structurally rather than lexically, and (d) roots are dominated by functional material (rather than the other way around). We argue that the first Merge operation in eac…

Ellipsis and EPP Repair
The article discusses ellipsis constructions in the English language. The author examines a hypothesis proposed by linguist Jason Merchant about situations in which a subject can be suspended in an elliptical statement with the Extended Projection Principle. After going over the hypothesis, he then presents linguists Howard Lasnik and Myung-Kwan Park's critique of Merchant. He argues that their critique is unfounded. Finally he offers three argum…
The crosslinguistic syntax of sluicing: Evidence From Hungarian Relatives
This paper deals with an elliptical construction in Hungarian that to our knowledge has not received any attention in the theoretical literature so far. It involves the deletion of a relative clause with the exclusion of the relative pronoun and one more remaining constituent. We show that this construction should be analyzed as an instance of sluicing. The theoretical approach we provide for these sentences is an adapted version ofMerchant's (20…
Syntactic Atlas of the Dutch Dialects
This paper discusses some of the advantages and disadvantages of the various choices we had to make in order to realize the Syntactic Atlas of the Dutch Dialects (SAND) in a relatively short period. The idea is that by presenting the SAND in this way, we enable the ScanDiaSyn project and other new dialect syntax projects to profit from our experience in a similar enterprise. The presentation and explicitation of the choices we had to make, the prob…
