Ignaz Seipel
Ignaz Seipel (1876-1932) was Chancellor and Foreign Minister of Austria's first, postwar republic and leader of its conservative party, the Christian Socialists. Born into the old order, a Catholic priest, a scholar and ascetic, Seipel was also a man whose worldly ambitions led him to the center of Austrian politics during the turbulent period of her adjustment from multinational empire to small power. Originally published in 1972. The Princeton …
Bishop von Galen
Clemens August Graf von Galen (1878-1946) is popularly known as the “Lion of Münster” for his resolute opposition to Nazism, notably to Hitler's policy of euthanasia that was to cleanse Germany of the mentally retarded. Von Galen was the Bishop of Münster in Westphalia until he became a cardinal in 1946, shortly before his death. In the summer of 1941, he delivered three powerful sermons against euthanasia and the closing of monasteries. The serm…

Adam von Trott zu Solz and Resistance Foreign Policy
Resistance under conditions of close to total control is fraught with enormous, almost insurmountable, difficulties. And in the Germany of 1933–45 they were compounded by the fact that the “totalitarianism” of the state was effective not merely by virtue of controls it exercised, but also of the consensus it had managed to whip up. But the most agonizing difficulties were of an ethical order: unlike the Resistance movements in the Nazi-occupied c…

Towards a Fourth Reich? The History of National Bolshevism in Germany
National Bolshevism represents a chapter in German-Russian relations since the First World War. As a policy advocating an Eastern orientation for Germany it is a most puzzling and at this day a very acute phenomenon. To those educated to observe the spectrum of political opinions in terms of Right and Left, with the extreme Right at the opposite end from the extreme Left, National Bolshevism seems a paradox. It suggests the meeting of extremes. M…
