Glacial geology of Thomas Island, Bunger Hills, East Antarctica
Thomas Island (Bunger Hills, East Antarctica) is a 34 square kilometre, deglaciated area potentially impacted by the East Antarctic ice sheet and Remenchus Glacier from the east, Shackleton Ice Shelf from the north and Edisto Glacier from the west. Its glacial geology reveals a complex interplay between these ice masses, which operate with different spatial and temporal dynamics. This poster maps glacial erosional and depositional features and al…
Holocene environmental history of Thomas Island, Bunger Oasis, East Antarctica, inferred from a lake sediment record
Over the last decades, climate change led to only moderate changes of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS). In recent years, however, modelling approaches and field experiments have shown that also the EAIS is increasingly affected by ice mass losses. In order to obtain information on temporal/spatial ice sheet changes at the margins of the major glaciers in East Antarctica, northern Bunger Hills were visited within the frame of the EASI3 "RV Pola…
Human (Clovis)–gomphothere ( Cuvieronius sp.) association ∼13,390 calibrated yBP in Sonora, Mexico
Significance Archaeological evidence from Sonora, Mexico, indicates that the earliest widespread and recognizable group of hunter-gatherers (“Clovis”) were in place ∼13,390 y ago in southwestern North America. This is the earliest well-documented population on the continent and suggests that the unique Clovis artifact style originated in the southwest or south central part of the continent, well south of the Arctic gateways into the continent. Th…
Radiocarbon and Tree-Ring Dates of the Bes-Shatyr #3 Saka Kurgan in the Semirechiye, Kazakhstan
This study employs tree-ring crossdating and radiocarbon measurements to determine the precise calendar age of the Bes-Shatyr Saka necropolis (43°47′N, 81°21′E) built for wealthy tribe leaders in the Ili River Valley (Semirechiye), southern Kazakhstan. We developed a 218-yr tree-ring chronology and a highly resolved sequence of 14 C from timbers of Bes-Shatyr kurgan #3. A 4-decadal-point 14 C wiggle dates the Bes-Shatyr necropolis to 600 cal BC. …
Environment and paleoecology of a 12 ka mid-North American Younger Dryas forest chronicled in tree rings
Until now, availability of wood from the Younger Dryas abrupt cooling event (YDE) in N. America ca. 12.9 to 11.6 ka has been insufficient to develop high-resolution chronologies for refining our understanding of YDE conditions. Here we present a multi-proxy tree-ring chronology (ring widths, “events” evidenced by microanatomy and macro features, stable isotopes) from a buried black spruce forest in the Great Lakes area (Liverpool East site), span…
Radiocarbon “Wiggles” in Great Lakes Wood at About 10,000 to 12,000 BP
High-resolution radiocarbon calibration for the last 14,000 cal yr has been developed in large part using European oaks and pines. Recent subfossil wood collections from the Great Lakes region provide an opportunity to measure 14 C activity in decadal series of rings in North America prior to the White Mountains bristlecone record. We developed decadal 14 C series from wood at the classic Two Creeks site (∼11,850 BP) in east-central Wisconsin, th…
Accurate Lacustrine and Wetland Sediment Accumulation Rates Determined from 14 C Activity of Bulk Sediment Fractions
In the absence of identifiable macrofossils in lacustrine sediments, radiocarbon dating must rely on pollen or bulk sediment fractions. Bulk sediment fractions are not generally preferred because they contain an unknown mixture of organic material of variable age, they may contain dead carbon such as lignite that is difficult to eliminate, and material of aquatic origin may be subject to reservoir effects. If the various processes that contribute…
Climate in the Great Lakes Region Between 14,000 and 4000 Years Ago from Isotopic Composition of Conifer Wood
The isotopic composition of ancient wood has the potential to provide information about past environments. We analyzed the δ 13 C, δ 18 O, and δ 2 H of cellulose of conifer trees from several cross-sections at each of 9 sites around the Great Lakes region ranging from ∼4000 to 14,000 cal BP. Isotopic values of Picea , Pinus , and Thuja species seem interchangeable for δ 18 O and δ 2 H comparisons, but Thuja appears distinctly different from the o…
Changes in Sediment Accumulation Rate in An Oxbow Lake Following Late 19Th Century Clearing of Land for Agricultural Use
Sediment cores were collected from 2 sites in the forested fringe of an oxbow lake surrounded by land that was converted from forest to agricultural use in the late 19th century. The 2 sampling areas were selected to represent areas of high (West site) and low (East site) current sediment accumulation rates, based on distance from a perennially discharging stream. Modern (post settlement and land clearing) sediment accumulation rates were calcula…
High-Resolution AMS 14 C Dating of Post-Bomb Peat Archives of Atmospheric Pollutants
Peat deposits in Greenland and Denmark were investigated to show that high-resolution dating of these archives of atmospheric deposition can be provided for the last 50 years by radiocarbon dating using the atmospheric bomb pulse. 14 C was determined in macrofossils from sequential one cm slices using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Values were calibrated with a general-purpose curve derived from annually averaged atmospheric 14 CO 2 values …
