  • Sweden does not meet agreed national and international forest biodiversity targets: A call for adaptive landscape planning

Open Access•Per Angelstam, Michael Manton et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape and Urban Planning•2020

Loss of forest naturalness challenges the maintenance of green infrastructure (GI) for biodiversity conservation and delivery of diverse ecosystem services. Using the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Aichi target #11 with its quantitative and qualitative criteria as a normative model, we aim at supporting landscape planning through a pioneering assessment of the extent to which existing amounts and spatial distributions of High Conservation V…

  • Archaeological and Palaeo-environmental Investigations of the Upper Allen Valley, Cranborne Chase, Dorset (1998–2000): A New Model of Earlier Holocene Landscape Development

Open Access•C French, Helen Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2003•Cited by: 2•References: 31

A combination of on- and off-site palaeo-environmental and archaeological investigations of the upper Allen valley of Dorset conducted in 1998–2000 has begun to reveal a different model of landscape development than those previously put forward. A combination of off-site geoarchaeological and aerial photographic survey and palynological analyses of two relict palaeochannel systems, and sample investigations of four Bronze Age round barrows and a …

  • Radar Observations of Arctic Bird Migration at the Northwest Passage, Canada

Open Access•Gudmundur A Gudmundsson, Thomas Alerstam et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2002

Bird migration was recorded by tracking radar and visual observation at 23 sites in the region of the Northwest Passage, between Baffin Island and Herschel Island in the Beaufort Sea. The studies took place during a ship-based expedition from 29 June to 3 September 1999. A total of 692 tracks (average duration 160 s) of bird flocks on postbreeding migration were recorded. Eastward migration was widespread, with the highest intensities at three si…

  • Weber and Lawrence and Anarchism

Martin Green, Martin A Green•CHAPTER•Max Weber and the Culture of…•1999

My idea of Max Weber was shaped by the way I encountered him in writing the story of the von Richthofen sisters; and one aspect of that shaping was his being paired contrastively with D. H. Lawrence. In consequence I saw Weber’s work from an oblique angle; nor did I ever know it as thoroughly as did the other people attending the 1995 Max Weber (British Sociological Association) conference. I was well aware, when I published The von Richthofen Si…

  • An Early Prehistoric Shaft on Cranborne Chase

Open Access•Martin Green, Martin A Green et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•1997•Cited by: 4

Continuing field work on Cranborne Chase has examined a unique shaft in Fir Tree Field, Down Farm in the parish of Gussage St Michael. Although shafts are known in prehistoric contexts elsewhere in England in the form of Neolithic flint mines, ritual shafts and even Bronze Age wells (Wilsford), the shaft reported here is particularly early and remains, at present, unexplained. Excavation and augering has revealed a shaft over 25 m deep containing…

  • The Earlier Prehistoric Settlement of Cranborne Chase-the First Results of Current Fieldwork

    Open Access•John C Barrett, John Barrett et al.•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1981•Cited by: 6•References: 28

This paper offers a provisional assessment of the development of settlement in part of Cranborne Chase between the Mesolithic and the Late Bronze Age. It builds upon the results of Pitt Rivers' work in this region between 1880 and 1900, as well as more recent excavation and field survey. Special emphasis is placed on three factors: the relationship between activity in this area and settlement both in central Wessex and on the coastal plain; the p…
