  • Demographic Techniques: Life‐Table Methods

    Open Access•Robert Schoen, Robert E Schoen•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2017

A life table describes the survival of a hypothetical group of persons from birth, through successive ages, to the death of the last member. In doing so, it shows the implications of a set of age‐specific mortality rates for the probability of surviving from one age to another, and provides useful summary measures such as the expectation of life at birth. Beyond its wide use in studies of mortality, the life table has been used in studies of marr…

  • Informed Decision-Making and Colorectal Cancer Screening: Is it Occurring in Primary Care

    Bruce S Ling, Xuefeng B Ling et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2008•References: 17

BACKGROUND: Current recommendations advise patients to participate in the decision-making for selecting a colorectal cancer (CRC) screening option. The degree to which providers communicate the information necessary to prepare patients for participation in this process is not known. OBJECTIVE: To assess the level of informed decision-making occurring during actual patient-provider communications on CRC screening and test for the association betwe…

  • Modeling Momentum in Gradual Demographic Transitions

Open Access•Robert Schoen, Robert E Schoen et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2003

The analysis of population momentum following a gradual decline in fertility to replacement level provides valuable insights into prospects for future population growth. Here, we extend recent work in the area by applying a new form of the quadratic hyperstable (QH) model, which relates exponentially changing fertility to the resultant exponentiated quadratic birth sequence. Modeling gradual transitions from an initial stable population to an ult…
