We have never been Nazis: Forgetting the far right in interwar America
During the 1930s, fascist ideologies and organizations were in vogue not only in Europe but also in the United States. Although they did not speak with one voice, interwar American fascist organizations sought to implement a white Christian ethnostate and were often willing to use violence to achieve their goals. The German-American Bund, with at least 100,000 members, was perhaps the best-known among them. Yet today, the history of the Bund and …

Ken Plummer’s contributions to the study of sexualities and beyond
This special issue pays tribute to and critically engages with the work of Ken Plummer, the founder of this journal. A distinguished sociologist who taught at the University of Essex for thirty years, Ken died last November, at age 76. We conceived of this issue two years ago, long before we anticipated his untimely death. Answering our call, several scholars offered considerations of the significance of his work
“A very risky queer thing to do”: In conversation with Ken Plummer
A conversation about the different generational experiences of LGBT academics and the changing status of sexuality and queer studies. Ken Plummer, Arlene Stein and Travis Kong, longtime colleagues and sociologists of sexuality, share their insights. They discuss how different generational contexts and geographic locations shape sexuality studies. They acknowledge the ways Ken's work, and the efforts of his generation of activist-scholars, played …
Gender, Authoritarian Populisms, and the Attack on Democracy
The rhetoric of “saving children” has long been central to the religious right playbook in the United States, especially in campaigns against abortion rights, gay/lesbian rights, and against comprehensive sex education. Today the guardians of the traditional family, increasingly globalized, have shifted their focus to protecting women and girls from so‐called “gender ideology.” These campaigns emerge in relation to a renewed authoritarian populis…

Manufacturing Islamophobia: Rightwing Pseudo-Documentaries and the Paranoid Style
Rightwing organizations in the United States have produced and circulated a number of videos which exaggerate the threat Islamic militants pose to ordinary citizens in the West. These videos owe a great deal to the frames established two decades earlier in religious right campaigns against homosexuality. This article provides a textual analysis of these videos and their production, showing how they manifest “heated exaggeration, suspiciousness, a…

Citizens of a Fictional Nation: Ottoman-born Jews in France during the First World War
Before he was a stowaway, Jack Azose was an Ottoman subject. Upon his arrival in France he was undocumented and a suspected spy until, with the assistance of Paris’ Prefecture of Police, he became ‘ ... a foreigner of Jewish nationality from the Levant’ ( un étranger de nationalité Israélite du Levant ) in the eyes of the law. It was the time of the First World War. Jack was fifteen, claiming to be eighteen. 1 The legal nomenclature that was gran…
The Shame of Survival
The Shame of Survival: Rethinking Trauma’s Aftermath
Some 140,000 Jewish refugees from war-devastated Europe arrived on American shores after the defeat of the Nazis. Generally between the ages of 15 and 35, they spent years in concentration camps, hiding in forests, passing as gentiles in Warsaw or Berlin, or exiled in Russia. Many were the sole survivors of their families, or nearly so (Dinnerstein, 1982). They spoke a variety of different languages—Russian, Polish, German, Greek, Yiddish, and mo…

The Incredible Shrinking Lesbian World and other Queer Conundra
This is a reflection on the state of lesbian identity politics, focusing on claims that lesbian subcultures are shrinking and even dying. Current fears focus on the increasingly permeable boundaries between butch lesbians and female-to-male transgender individuals, but its history is much longer. What we are seeing, quite possibly, is the exhaustion of a particular historical construction: a group of individuals who are defined primarily on the b…
Sex, Truths, and Audiotape: Anonymity and the Ethics of Exposure in Public Ethnography
This article discusses ethical issues confronted in The Stranger Next Door, my ethnographic study of a small town divided by a local ballot initiative against gay/lesbian civil rights. Seeking to intervene in public debates about the issue, I wrote a book that was broadly accessible, painting vivid portraits of local activists engaged in this conflict. When the pseudonymous community was "outed" by a review in the statewide newspaper, rightwing a…
As Far as They Knew I Came from France: Stigma, Passing, and Not Speaking about the Holocaust
Today we recognize that storytelling plays an important role in helping survivors of traumatic episodes such as sexual abuse, military combat, or genocide refashion a sense of self and 'work through' their traumatic experiences. But before the Holocaust was named and widely acknowledged and the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress had emerged, survivors of Hitler's genocidal policies struggled to tell their stories in a world that did not particula…

Make Room for Daddy: Anxious Masculinity and Emergent Homophobias in Neopatriarchal Politics
What are the sources of continuing antipathy toward homosexuality, and what might they tell us about changing forms of American masculinity? This article documents some emergent homophobias circulating among conservative activists in relation to campaigns against gay rights in the early 1990s and against gay marriage in 2004. As feminist critiques of traditional masculinity make their way into conservative rhetoric and as men struggle to define a…

Whose Memories? Whose Victimhood? Contests for the Holocaust Frame in Recent Social Movement Discourse
Fifty years after the end of World War II, the Holocaust is being utilized as a symbolic resource by US social movements. This article investigates social movement 'framing' processes, looking at the use of Holocaust rhetoric and imagery by social movement organizations and actors. I explore how competing movements, the lesbian/gay movement and the Christian right, battle over the same symbolic territory, and how the Holocaust frame is deployed b…

A Symposium on the Clinton-Lewinsky Affair: Clinton, the Rightwing, and ‘Civilized’ Sexual Morality
The Clinton Affair raises so many issues around sexuality that a new journal on sexualities could hardly afford to ignore it. In this symposium, six prominent commentators provide brief analyses. Arlene Stein examines the role of the Clinton-Lewinsky Affair within the debate in the US known as ‘culture wars’. Stevi Jackson ponders why US feminists were so quiet on the issue, and provides her own analysis. Stephen O. Murray and Laurie Shrage both …

In Our Own Way
During the past decade, Asian lesbians began to form cultural, social and political networks in major cities across the country. In May 1987 the first West Coast Asian/Pacific Lesbian Retreat, ”Coming Out and Coming Together,” drew about eighty women, mostly from the San Francisco Bay Area. The following October, a group of sixty Asian lesbians and gay men from across the country formed an Asian contingent at the 1987 March on Washington for Gay …

Revenge of the Shamed: The Christian Right's Emotional Culture War
This chapter focuses on the activism of the Christian Right. It suggests that their activism is more than a quest to repair the world and transform culture. It is an effort to repair themselves, and in this it is a deeply personal quest. While Christian conservatives are fond of speaking of their motives as a selfless commitment to higher authorities — family, nation, God — their stories indicate that their activism is not reducible to external g…
