Organising for Change one year later – Response to the critics
A year after the publication of Organising for Change it is wonderful to learn what readers think about our attempt to understand the ways in which people and organisations try to achieve or prevent social change. We are grateful to Malin Arvidson, Lydia Hiraide and elena pavan for sharing their reflections and constructive engagement with our book. We particularly appreciate their recognition of our effort to reframe social movements as parts of…

Impacts of Changes in Consumption, Production and Trade Policies in China and India on the European Union and New Zealand
This study assessed the potential impacts of changes in meat and dairy consumption and production, as well as different trade policies in China and India, on agricultural trade in New Zealand (NZ) and the European Union (EU-27), using the Lincoln Trade and Environment Model (LTEM). This partial equilibrium model forecasts international trade, production and consumption of agricultural commodities. Several scenarios were developed simulating diffe…
Consumer Preferences for Attributes in Food and Beverages in Developed and Emerging Export Markets and their Impact on the European Union and New Zealand
This study examined consumer attitudes towards attributes in food and beverages in China, India, Indonesia, Japan and the UK. The attributes included basic attributes such as price and quality, but also extended to food safety and health benefits, as well as environmental and social attributes. The importance of factors affecting key attributes were examined in more detail. The study used a web-based survey with 1,000 middle and upper income cons…
Wellbeing Economics: The Capabilities Approach to Prosperity
This free (open-access PDF) book sets out a wellbeing economics framework that directly addresses fundamental issues affecting wellbeing outcomes. Twenty-Five Years of Counting for Nothing: Waring's Critique of National Accounts
Marilyn Waring’s If Women Counted (1988) shows how national income accounting became infused with the patriarchal values dominant during its post–World War II development. This article revisits Waring’s analysis in the light of continued support of gross domestic product as a useful statistic. It explains the historical and personal context for her analysis, emphasizing postwar patriarchal values as well as Waring’s experience as a Member of the …

Unemployment and attitudes to work: Asking the 'Right' Question
Attitudes research has repeatedly demonstrated that the vast majority of unemployed people want a job and that their employment commitment is generally at least as strong as employed people's. However, until now it has not asked if they are more likely than employed people to prefer unemployment to an unattractive job. While this oversight reflects a noted widespread reluctance to respond directly to right-wing authors' assertions, this article a…
Do consumers of manufactured cigarettes respond differently to price changes compared with their Roll-Your-Own counterparts? Evidence from New Zealand
There is significantly different price responsiveness across the two tobacco product types. MC smokers react far more strongly to price increases compared with RYO tobacco smokers. These findings suggest that pricing mechanisms may be more effective for reducing MC demand than for RYO tobacco. However, substitution between products means that this pricing effect is muted by the uptake of RYO tobacco use. Cessation policy specific to RYO use shoul…
Applying Sen's Capability Approach to Poverty Alleviation Programs: Two Case Studies
This research investigated whether Sen's Capability Approach could be applied to two very different programs for human development. The first case study involved a poverty alleviation program based around community gardens in a low‐income neighborhood of a moderately sized city in New Zealand. The second was a self‐help development project for village women in the Pacific Island nation of Samoa. Sixteen focus groups of participants in the two pro…
Carbon Footprints, Life Cycle Analysis, Food Miles: Global Trade Trends and Market Issues
Growing international concern about the environment is a great threat to New Zealand access into high value markets. In particular the issue of climate change has grown in political importance as illustrated by the application of the Kyoto Protocol and public debate about issues such as ‘food miles’. Whilst the paper concentrates upon the impact of the latter debates on United Kingdom and European Union markets, there is growing evidence that con…
