  • Framing Contests Between Dutch Activists and Local News Media: The Eurodusnie Anarchist Group, Leiden, 1997–2002

Open Access•Bart van der Steen, Peter Burger et al.•ARTICLE•TMG Journal for Media History•2021

In order to gain a better understanding of the dynamics between activists and mainstream media, this paper analyses the ways in which the Dutch, Leiden-based anarchist collective Eurodusnie (1997–2002) responded to negative publicity. While many have described the relationship between social movements and the mass media as asymmetric, assigning a dominant role to mass media, our paper emphasises the agency of a local social movement and the strat…

  • Text bite news: The metapragmatics of feature news

    Tom Van Hout, J P Burger•ARTICLE•Text and Talk•2017

Drawing on a weekly news feature of recontextualized public discourse, this paper examines journalists’ uptake of political (mis)communication. We label such mediatized speech events text bites . Text bites present us with eye-catching bits of reported speech about the main characters: the politician whose words are being quoted and the journalist captioning the quote. Rather than speak for themselves, the quotes speak through recontextualization…

Tom Van Hout, Peter Burger et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Language and…•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 38

At the intersection of applied linguistics and journalism studies lies media linguistics. This emerging subdisciplinary label is an umbrella term for the study of mass mediated language use, which, for the purposes of this chapter, is restricted to news media: public or private institutions of mass communication that produce and spread public information commoditized as news. Two issues stand out in the literature on media linguistics (and beyond).…

  • Avant-Garde and Neo-Avant-Garde: An Attempt to Answer Certain Critics of Theory of the Avant-Garde

    Peter Burger, J P Burger•ARTICLE•New Literary History•2010•Cited by: 3

Peter Bürger reflects on the reception of his Theory of the Avant-Garde and crafts a spirited response to his critics, while expanding on and refining his original claims. For Bürger, what continues to distinguish the avant-garde are two interrelated principles: the attack on the institution of art and the revolutionary transformation of everyday life. Underscoring the explicitly theoretical, rather than merely historical, thrust of this definiti…

  • Health

Open Access•Julie L Gerberding, Dixie Snider et al.•ARTICLE•Disaster Prevention and…•2006

Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005, resulting in massive destruction from wind damage and storm surge. In Mississippi, the storm surge was an estimated 27 feet high at the Hancock County Emergency Operations Center and extended inland for 6-12 miles, causing extensive flooding in Biloxi and Gulfport and rendering approximately 80% of buildings in Waveland uninhabitable (1). The devastation was greatest in th…

A garden gnome is no longer a garden gnome. This is the dilemma facing contemporary art, that is circumscribed by the unhappy concept of post-modernity. Up until a certain moment (let us take 1969, the year of Adorno’s death, as a marker) a garden gnome was still a
