William Hanson and the Texas-Mexico Border: Violence, Corruption, and the Making of the Gatekeeper State
Murder and Intrigue on the Mexican Border: Governor Colquitt, President Wilson, and the Vergara Affair
The Mexican Revolution (1910–1917) led to violence along the border with the United States, resulting in collateral deaths and property damage in both countries. John A. Adams Jr. believes that historians have not focused sufficiently on this violence. His goal is to correct this oversight by examining violence perpetrated upon Texans, specifically the murder of the south Texas rancher Clemente Vergara in 1914. He also wishes to demonstrate how T…

The Villista Prisoners of 1916-1917
On 9 March 1916, Francisco “Pancho” Villa led 485 men in a raid upon Columbus, New Mexico. Six days later General John J. Pershing led troops of the U.S. army into Mexico to disperse or capture the Villistas. Although historians have analyzed the event in dozens of books and articles, Hurst’s work discusses a topic not included in these studies and, thus, fills a gap in our knowledge of the attack on Columbus. Using primarily the 184-page transcr…
