  • Artistic careers and crises. How did the pandemic affect Norwegian artists

Per Mangset, Bård Kleppe et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Trends•2023•References: 1

In this paper, we ask how the corona pandemic affected a cohort of former art school students. We have compared our findings with other studies of the consequences of the pandemic for Nordic artists. Most of our informants appeared less negatively affected by the pandemic than predicted by previous studies. None of those who responded said that they had left or considered leaving their professions, and none had experienced a disastrous loss of in…

  • The end of cultural policy? 1

    Per Mangset•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2018•Cited by: 17•References: 9

The article discusses whether we are approaching the end of public cultural policy in Western democracies, because contemporary cultural policy is not adapted to major transformation processes in contemporary societies. I discuss seven different challenges/scenarios that public cultural policy has to confront today: (1) It appears to be very difficult to democratise culture. (2) Public authorities consistently continue to support cultural institu…

  • Why are artists getting poorer? About the reproduction of low income among artists

Per Mangset, Mari T Heian et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 6

In the period 2006 to 2013, Norway has experienced a substantial increase in public subsidies to culture as well as a substantial increase in real income growth in general. This paper discusses different explanations for why Norwegian artists’ real artistic income has declined between 2006 and 2013, despite the positive economic development in Norway. We have based the study in particular on two comparable studies on the income and work situation…

  • Artists in an Iron Cage? Artists’ Work in Performing Arts Institutions

Per Mangset, Bård Kleppe et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Arts Management…•2012

This article discusses artists’ work in performing arts institutions in Norway. Many scholars describe Nordic performing arts institutions as slow-moving and heavy “art factories,” where artistic creativity is almost suffocated within bureaucratic “prisons.” The general problem that we raise in the article is whether this pessimistic picture of the relation between state control, market influence, and artistic work is relevant for studying the pe…

  • Sport and Policy

Barrie Houlihan, Matthew Nicholson et al.•BOOK•Sport Policy•2009

Sport and Policy is the first book of its kind to critically analyse the regulatory role of the state and its impact on sport and the intersections of sport with other areas of government policy. Offering a unique and comprehensive examination of how sport is affected by a range of government policy, each chapter uses an international comparative approach in order to facilitate a broad understanding of sport and policy in a global context. This b…

  • Sport Policy

Nils Asle Bergsgard, Barrie Houlihan et al.•BOOK•Sport Policy•2009

Sport Policy: a comparative analysis of stability and change builds on the growing general interest in the comparative study of sport policy and the more specific interest in processes of policy change and issues associated with policy convergence. In stark contrast to many other areas of public policy such as education, personal welfare and health care there is a paucity of theoretically informed comparative studies in sport. Over recent years t…

  • Young Artists and the Charismatic Myth

Sigrid Røyseng, Per Mangset et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2007•Cited by: 19•References: 4

This article focuses on artist identities in contemporary culture. In particular, the authors have studied how young Norwegian artists identify with the term “artist” in general and the charismatic myth of the artist in particular. It is argued that it is fruitful to treat the charismatic myth of the artist as a discourse that must be analysed in relation to specific social and cultural contexts and potentially under continuous reconstruction. Th…
