Children’s digital content creation: Towards a processual understanding of media production among Danish children
This article explores how we may study children’s digital content creation as creative processes of production. Based on a case study of 6-16-year-olds’ filmmaking in an out-of-school context, the analysis identifies three interlaced categories marking the production processes: Social interaction, semiotic negotiation and practice-based learning. Results demonstrate that joint creation of new film narratives unleashes students’ playful exploratio…
Minimizing Knowledge Scepticism – Resourcing Students through Media and Information Literacy
Globally connected and commodified digital means of communication offer a wealth of information across age-bands and across formal and informal sites of learning, yet few students obtain systematic training in transforming this information to knowledge that is tailored to their level of understanding and to the settings of learning. This gap between access to unsorted and often unsolicited information across boundaries of space, learning and gene…
The Routledge Handbook of Museums, Media and Communication
Museums today find themselves within a mediatised society, where everyday life is conducted in a data-full and technology-rich context. In fact, museums are themselves mediatised: they present a uniquely media-centred environment, in which communicative media is a constitutive property of their organisation and of the visitor experience. The Routledge Handbook of Museums, Media and Communication explores what it means to take mediated communicati…
Young people's own museum views
Taking a mixed-methods, visitor-focused approach to views on museums, this article examines what views young Danes aged 13–23 years (n = 2,350) hold on museums and how these views can be categorized and articulated. Arguing that studying views of museums as socially situated meaning-making practices adds theoretical and empirical depth to existing research and practice, we apply semantic categorization, speech-act theory, and cognitive linguistic…
Modernity and media panics
Library loans were relatively unaffected. Prompted by key publishing directors, the initial focus on video was widened to encompass the entire relation between visual and print media, a relation that was almost unanimously envisaged as an opposition. The police, teachers, and social workers get involved and people have what Cohen defines as a moral panic. Moral panics, according to Cohen, serve as ideological safety valves whose effect it is to r…
Mediated co-construction of museums and audiences on Facebook
This article asks how we should research museum communication with audiences through social media. We argue that museums and audiences co-construct one another on social media, and we explore how particular modes of communication and discursive genres serve to generate mutual online positionings. Based on in-depth analyses over three months’ Facebook communication at nine Danish museums and applying theories and methods from discourse analysis, w…

The International Handbook of Children, Media and Culture
Children, youth and the mobile phone In its short life, a surprisingly large literature on the use of mobile communication among children and teens has been written. Indeed, in recent years there has hardly been a conference or a collection of readings that did not include work in this area. The iconic status of the mobile telephone among children and teens has been one of the big surprises associated with this form of communication. While origin…
Bred mediebrug, bedre kompetencer?

Difference and diversity: Trends in young Danes' media uses
Drawing on results from a four-year project of basic research, and applying quantitative as well as qualitative methods, this article describes important, recent trends in young Danes' media culture and discusses the research implications that these trends enforce and enhance. Three empirical trends stand out: innovation in media applications, increased interaction between media types and genres, and a more `seamless' social integration of media …

Dangerous Media? Panic Discourses and Dilemmas of Modernity
The article focuses on the history of so‐called media panics, i.e. emotionally charged reactions on the appearance of new media. Tracing “la longue durée” of panics overprint, film and computer media and taking examples from Britain, Germany, Sweden and Denmark, the author argues that media panics are intrinsic and recurrent features of modernity. They represent a complex constellation of generational, cultural and existential power struggles thr…
Medierade minnen: Radio, Film Och Formandet Av Unga Kvinnors Kulturella Identiteter
The artide analyses ways in which the media may operate in relation to our memories: media may be means through which memories are preserved (e.g. family photographs), or media may be objects of specific memories (e.g. a particular film). Based on in-depth lifephase interviews with ten women born between 1917 and 1927, the study focuses on the importance of radio and film in memory since these were the two new mass media flourishing when these wo…
Discourse on cultural practices does not always correspond to the reality revealed by surveys. The difference between this reality and the image some people have is partly due to generation gaps. The author supports her argument with a synthesis of empirical studies in Denmark on children's and adolescents' uses of various media. Among other differences, she notes the widening gap between young boys and girls
Global Culture in Practice: A Look at Children and Adolescents in Denmark, France and Israel
This article discusses a preliminary exploration of how globalization becomes embedded into the lives of children and adolescents in three very different countries: Denmark, France and Israel. Analysis of qualitative data collected from the three countries as part of a major cross-cultural study suggests five interrelated practices of globalization: (1) the role of television as both a default medium and as a source of favourite contents; (2) the…

The museum foyer as a transformative space of communication
This article explores how we may study physical museum foyers as multilayered spaces of communication. Based on a critical examination of ways in which the museum foyer is conceptualised in the research literature, we define the foyer as a transformative space of communication for visitors which has four transformative functions, and we ask the following question: How do people entering the museum practise these transformative functions so as to …

Unge, Medier, Modernitet
