The relationship between Calvinism and the emergence of constitutional, liberal, limited or democratic government remains as disputed as ever. • (Un)masking the Realities of Power: Justus Lipsius and the Dynamics of Political Writing in Early Modern Europe

Erik De Bom, Marijke Janssens et al.•BOOK•(Un)masking the realities of power•2011

If Justus Lipsius’s Politica of 1589 and its importance to the history of political thought needs no introduction, Lipsius's Monita et exempla politica (1605), conceived as a sequel to the Politica, has been overlooked time and again despite the fact that it is a unique key to understand the precise character of Lipsius's political thought. For, is his widely read political dialogue a Neostoic discourse or is it Tacitean, Machiavellian, or even a…

  • The Ideal of Aristocratia Politiae Vicina in the Calvinist Political Tradition

    H M Höpfl, Harro Höpfl•CHAPTER•Calvin and his influence, 1509-2009•2011

This is an examination of aristocracy as an orienting principle in Calvin's own political theory and ecclesiology, which goes on to consider its place in the Calvinist political tradition. For many reasons, political and theological, the chapter argues, Calvinist political tradition assumed an autonomous existence in the course of the seventeenth century so that it progressively bore less and less resemblance to anything found in Calvin.

  • Thomas Fitzherbert's reason of state

    Harro Höpfl•ARTICLE•History of European Ideas•2011•Cited by: 1

Thomas Fitzherbert's two-part Treatise concerning Policy and Religion (1606, 1610) was a rebuttal of unidentified Machiavellians, statists or politikes and their politics and policies. The work was apparently still well-regarded in the following century. Fitzherbert's objections to ‘statism’ were principally religious, and he himself thought the providentialist case against it unanswerable. But for those who did not share his convictions, he atte…

  • The Christian Polity of John Calvin

    Open Access•Harro Höpfl•BOOK•Christian Polity of John Calvin•1982

This book explores the relationship between Calvin's thought about civil and ecclesiastical order and his own circumstances and activities. The early chapters argue that in his pre-Genevan writings, including the first edition of the Institution, Calvin's political thinking was entirely conventional; his subsequent thought and conduct were not an implementation of previously formulated ideas. Later chapters examine whether and to what extent Calv…
