Advancing the Construct of Self-Leadership
Self-leadership, or an individual's efforts to influence oneself to perform, is considered a prerequisite for leading others. Informed by Reichers and Schneider's (1990) 3-stage model of construct evolution, we leverage multiple bibliometric methods to map self-leadership's introduction, evaluation, and consolidation. This paper is guided by four research questions: RQA) What theories underlie self-leadership, and how is the construct elaborated…
Broken engagement
As the roles of faculty members have continued to expand, leaders in higher education need a better understanding of the drivers of faculty engagement. The current paper develops and tests a hypothesized model of faculty engagement in which faculty member grit is positively related to faculty member engagement both directly and indirectly through faculty member–academic chair leader member exchange (LMX). Using a sample of 156 faculty members in …

How Trust in Information Sources Influences Preventative Measures Compliance during the Covid-19 Pandemic
This paper explores how trust in formal information sources (government and media) and informal information sources (interpersonal) about COVID-19 influences compliance with preventive measures. Data analyses using structural equation modeling with multigroup comparisons examine hypothesized relationships between trust in information sources and preventative behaviors…
Shades of grey in implicit effective leadership
In this paper, we extend research on implicit leadership theories by exploring and clarifying the content and structure of effective leader prototypes. We invited 78 Chinese and 50 American business practitioners to describe effective and ineffective leaders. Drawing on grounded theory approaches, we coded 671 statements of participants and found 41 leader attributes. After grouping these attributes into eight themes, we found that the structure …
Whistle While You Work
There has been a growing interest in leader emotion in organizational scholarship. Concomitantly, the body of research on self-leadership continues to expand. Nonetheless, relatively little work has focused on emotional self-leadership. We address this void by exploring intrapersonal and interpersonal aspects of emotional self-leadership and its inherent challenges and opportunities. Specifically, we examine how emotional self-leadership strategi…
A Cross-Cultural Examination of Self-Leadership
The purpose of this study is to examine the cross-cultural validity of self-leadership by confirming a second-order factor structure and testing for measurement invariance in the operationalization of the self-leadership construct across four distinct national cultures: the United States, China, Germany, and Portugal. Results provide evidence in support of the cross-cultural validity of the hierarchical factor structure of self-leadership and in …
Faculty Union and Faculty Senate Co-Existence
This paper examines the intersection between faculty unions and faculty senates along with the costs and benefits that each pays and receives relative to one another. More specifically, the authors examine the impact of academic collective bargaining on shared governance traditions, providing an analysis of whether the relationship of unions and governance systems has been symbiotic or non-symbiotic. The authors also explore the overall beneficia…

Toward a Contingency Model of Leadership and Psychological Empowerment
In this paper, we develop and present a contingency model of leadership and psychological empowerment that specifies the circumstances and situations under which follower self-leadership should be encouraged. The model suggests that certain key contingency factors, including follower development, situational urgency and task structure, dictate which of several leadership approaches, including directive, transactional, transformational and empower…
