Printers, Translators, Epitomizers: Seventeenth-century Publications of Sennert’s Works in Italy, the Netherlands, France and England
This article opts for a book-historical approach that has not to date attracted much of a following in studies on Daniel Sennert. It focuses on a selection of Italian, French, Dutch and English printed works published outside of Germany after 1630, and illustrates how Sennert’s European fame began to rise from that time onwards. Likewise, it establishes that Latin editions remained common through most parts of Europe, with the exception of Englan…
European Physico-theology (1650-c.1760) in Context: Celebrating Nature and Creation
Physico-theology harnessed the observation of nature to the recognition of God as Creator and to a demonstration of the compatibility of the biblical record with the new science. The new science emerged from the mid-seventeenth century. The present book offers the first study in English of physico-theology on a European scale. Its main argument is that physico-theology not only grew into an intellectual movement across Protestant Europe from the …

Oswald Myconius: Briefwechsel 1515-15522: Eine Würdigung
This short article surveys the recently published correspondence of Oswald Myconius (in the form of detailed regestae) from 1515 to the year of his death in 1552, edited by Rainer Henrich. Like the publications of Amy Nelson Burnett of the last three decades, it offers a view of Myconius’ activities at the head of Basel’s Reformed church from 1532, that differs from the older Basel historiography which portrayed him chiefly as the faithful custod…
Basel 1516: Erasmus' Edition of the New Testament
In 1516, Erasmus of Rotterdam's version of the New Testament, featuring the editio princeps of the Greek text, a revised Latin translation and comprehensive annotations, was published by Johann Froben in Basel. The edition proved to be of great significance for the history of scholarship and books. It marked a milestone in classical text publishing and laid the foundation for the reception of the Biblical text during the Reformation and Counter-R…

Nicholas Terpstra. Religious Refugees in the Early Modern World: An Alternative History of the Reformation
Nicholas Terpstra’s most recent book offers a strikingly new look at the early modern era. Instead of portraying the religious changes of the sixteenth century and their consequences as a success story, he chooses to look at the accounts of social purification and exile connected to them. No easy reading when building high fences and walls to keep out migrants and refugees wins considerable public applause today in Europe and North America alike,…
Hometown Religion: Regimes of Coexistence in Early Modern Westphalia
In central Europe, the reformations and reforms of the sixteenth century, both Catholic and Protestant, eventually resulted in a process of doctrinal and, on the religio-political level, territorial consolidation. This was accompanied by increasing doctrinal othering, although, as David Luebke’s study once again makes clear, the chronology of this general transformation was marked by considerable regional and even local differences. Among special…

Ego-Documents: The Last Word
This article examines the concept of ‘egocuments’ from a historiographical perspective. It looks at its origins in the 1950s in the work of the Dutch historian Jacob Presser, at its revival in the work of Rudolf Dekker and his group from the 1970s onwards, and at the considerable expansion the notion was subjected to in the early 1990s by Winfried Schulze. The article argues that we should be aware of the noticeable differences between using the …

The Reformation in National Context
This collection of essays by prominent historians of the Reformation explores the experience of religious reform in 'national context', discussing similarities and differences between the reform movements in a dozen different countries of sixteenth-century Europe. Each author provides an interpretative essay emphasising local peculiarities and national variants on the broader theme of the Reformation as a European phenomenon. The individual essay…
Biographical Evidence on Predestination, Covenant, and Special Providence
Professor MacKinnon's analysis of Max Weber's interpretation of seventeenth-century English Calvinism is a wholesale rebuttal of Weber's method and conclusions. There are in the main two pillars on which this rebuttal rests. First, there is the claim that the impact of covenant theology and its reception in England during the initial decades of the seventeenth century seriously weakened and ultimately even destroyed the hold of the doctrine of pr…
Weber's Protestant Ethic: Origins, Evidence, Contexts
The historical relationship between Protestantism, capitalism, and democracy remains one of the most controversial intellectual themes of out time. Max Weber's famous thesis about the link between the 'Protestant ethic' and the 'spirit of capitalism' and its dissolution in his own era has been both widely acclaimed and heatedly disputed since its publication in 1904–5. This volume, the result of an international, interdisciplinary effort, throws …
