  • Improved biomass cookstove use in the longer run: Results from a field experiment in rural Ethiopia

Open Access•Alemu Mekonnen, Abebe Beyene et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Development…•2025

This study examines longer-run usage frequency of Mirt improved biomass cookstoves (ICS), one of the most important ICS promoted in Ethiopia. Mirt has been shown to improve childhood health, and reduce fuelwood consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, but to generate those benefits, households must regularly use it over extended periods. Thus, this paper focuses on longer-run use using stove surface temperature data over five time intervals. We …

  • Do Formal Community Forestry Programs Improve Collective Action and Forest Outcomes

Open Access•Harisharan Luintel, Randall Bluffstone et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Environment &…•2025

Forest tenure reform and devolution are taking place around the world, especially in lower-income countries, primarily to support environmental and livelihood goals. However, whether forest devolution to communities results in improved forest collective action is not fully understood. In this paper, we assess the effect of Nepal’s formal Community Forestry (CF) Program on forest collective action and outcomes. We utilize data from a nationally re…

  • Addressing Fundamental Uncertainty in Benefit–Cost Analysis: The Case of Deep Seabed Mining

    Open Access•Kerry Krutilla, David H Good et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Benefit-Cost Analysis•2021•References: 5

Mineral deposits of base metals, precious metals, and rare earth elements have been discovered on deep seabeds, and the commercial exploitation of these resources seems poised to begin after faltering for many years. The development of seabed resources could be socially beneficial if all goes well, but the industry faces daunting challenges and uncertainties. Emerging regulations and contracting mechanisms are the principal means for managing the…

Open Access•B K Sovacool, Morgan Bazilian et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

This research letter discusses elements of a long-term interdisciplinary research effort needed to help \nensure the maximum social, economic, and environmental benefits of achieving secure universal access to modern energy services. Exclusion of these services affects the lives and livelihoods of billions of people. The research community has an important, but not yet well-defined, role to play

  • The need for multiple types of information to inform climate change assessment

    Michael Toman•ARTICLE•Journal of Benefit-Cost Analysis•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Many critics of economic analysis of climate change impacts and response options claim that information is needed on ecosystem characteristics as well as on economic values to fully inform decisions about how climate change affects human well-being. Information on the irreversibility of impacts also is important, critics argue, because it relates to how society evaluates implications for intergenerational equity. In addition, because climate chan…

  • Alternative policies for the control of air pollution in Poland

Robin Bates, Robin W Bates et al.•BOOK•Alternative policies for the…•1994

Like other Central European countries, Poland faces the twin challenges of improving environmental quality while also promoting economic development. This study examines the cost of achieving alternative emission standards and the savings in abatement cost that might be achieved with policies that rely on economic incentives rather than with rigid " command and control " measures. The focus is primarily on three pollutants arising from energy com…
