  • North County Jail

    Sora Han, Sora Y Han•ARTICLE•boundary 2•2024•References: 6

This article explores the history of jail construction and architecture on the occasion of a now vacant North County Jail that sits in the center of downtown Oakland. Put to use neither by the state as COVID-19 ravaged overcrowded prisons nor by the city trying to find ways of offering shelter to the houseless, its vacancy became all the more material during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. What do abolitionists do with such vacancies? Inspir…

  • Res nulla loquitur

    Sora Han, Sora Y Han•ARTICLE•Women & Performance a journal of…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 18

The concept of res nulla loquitur, the no-thing speaks, is a reformulation of the rule of evidence, res ipsa loquitur, the thing speaks for itself. It is drawn from a careful examination of the recorded arrest of Sandra Bland in 2015, and the evidence collected in Texas's subsequent investigation of her death while in custody. Engaging with what remains of Sandra Bland's speech performatively by "listening while you look" (Moten), the article off…

  • Poetics of mu

    Sora Han, Sora Y Han•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2020•Cited by: 1

The daughter appears in Hortense Spillers’s literary criticism as an oblique subject of a doubled law of genealogy: first, the Oedipal ‘law of the Father’ which intervenes on the mother–child relation and structures genealogical descent; and second, the law of a specific form of slave law, partus sequitur ventrem, which negates the paternity of both the white master and the black slave in establishing that a mother’s slave status would be passed …

  • The purloined prisoner

    Open Access•Sora Y Han•ARTICLE•Theoretical Criminology•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 7

This article argues, in the form of demonstration, for the necessity of disciplinary openness in punishment and society scholarship. Theories about the political culture of punishment and sentimental accounts of the toll mass incarceration takes on the personal lives of millions are insufficient for developing a critical knowledge of the relationship between race, law and gender. Approaching the object of the letter unfettered by traditional disc…
