The Inference of Perceived Usability From Beauty
A review of 15 papers reporting 25 independent correlations of perceived beauty with perceived usability showed a remarkably high variability in the reported coefficients. This may be due to methodological inconsistencies. For example, products are often not selected systematically, and statistical tests are rarely performed to test the generality of findings across products. In addition, studies often restrict themselves to simply reporting corr…
Interaction Unit Analysis: A New Interaction Design Framework
A pragmatic approach to interaction modeling is presented by which a designer can describe how the user gets tasks done with a newly developing system. The notation proposed allows an interaction designer to make explicit both how user actions cause visible or noticeable changes in the state of the machine and how the user is expected to use this feedback to generate the next action. Interaction Unit (IU) scenarios are constructed where each IU s…
Telecare, telehealth and assistive technologies: Do we know what we're talking about
The development of telecare services in the UK has been supported by grants from the respective governments of Scotland and Wales, and by the Department of Health in England. New services are being established, sometimes to operate alongside existing community equipment services and community alarm services. Elsewhere they are embracing a wider range of services including rehabilitation, intermediate care and health services designed to reduce us…

Theory of Personalization of Appearance: Why Users Personalize Their PCs and Mobile Phones
Three linked qualitative studies were performed to investigate why people choose to personalize the appearance of their PCs and mobile phones and what effects personalization has on their subsequent perception of those devices. The 1st study involved 35 frequent Internet users in a 2-stage procedure. In the 1st phase they were taught to personalize a commercial Web portal and then a recommendation system, both of which they used in the subsequent…
Technology biographies: Field Study Techinques for Home Use Product Development
The technology biography combines and adapts a number of qualitative data collection techniques to focus on past, present and possible future domestic technologies. Processes, concerns and problems of domestic life are identified in order to develop illustrative product suggestions to inspire or provoke designers.
A Look Is Worth a Thousand Words: Full Gaze Awareness in Video-Mediated Conversation
Full gaze awareness, defined here as knowing what someone is looking at, might be expected to be a powerful communicative resource when the conversation concerns some object of common interest in the environment. This article sets out to demonstrate this possibility in the context of video-mediated communication. An experiment is reported in which pairs complete a communication task using a novel apparatus that supports full gaze awareness (GA) a…

Methods & tools: The Rich Picture: A Tool for Reasoning About Work Context
Have you ever observed the following situation? A computer system is built to satisfy well-specified requirements. The requirements clearly describe the task to be supported, and the system satisfies them. Despite all this care and attention, the system is universally condemned by management and users. Why does this happen? Surprisingly often, the task supported is not one that users actually perform. More likely, the model of work underlying the…
Concerns at Work: Designing Useful Procedures
The conceptual basis for designing procedures is confused by the problematics of characterising a relationship between procedures and work practices. As they emerge from scientific management theory, procedures connote a means of rationalising and controlling work. However, interpretations of the use of procedures reveal differences in emphasis on the work required to relate procedures to practice, from comprehending to evaluating appropriateness…
Algorithms for Automatic Dialogue Analysis Using Propositional Production Systems
The specification of a graphical user interface (GUI), like any other part of a computer system, is an incremental process whereby an outline of the system is systematically developed, evaluated, and revised until it is reasonably complete. This article describes some algorithms and procedures that can be used to automate the analysis of a specification to facilitate this iterative process. A propositional production system (PPS) is a notation th…
Management of Repair in Human-Computer Interaction
This article reports an investigation of the initiation and management of repair in human-computer interaction from a conversation-analytic perspective. It describes some ways in which pairs of novice users deal with what they see as trouble in the operation of a multiwindow database system called Sales and Marketing Information (SAMi). A typical sequence has the character of a user request followed by a pause or computer granting, leading to use…
Text-Based On-Line Conferencing: A Conceptual and Empirical Analysis Using a Minimal Prototype
This article is concerned with an analysis of the requirements for text-based on-line conferencing. From a system perspective, text-based on-line conferencing can be viewed as either message passing or data sharing. These complementary views give rise to different design dimensions. For example, the message-passing view is concerned with granularity, channels, message labels, and so on. The data-sharing view is concerned with the access different…
