Adaptive Trade-offs Towards the Last Glacial Maximum in North-Western Europe: A Multidisciplinary View from Walou Cave
The impact of deteriorating climatic conditions on variability in the archaeological record towards the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) remains uncertain. Partly as a result of poor-quality data, previous studies on Upper Palaeolithic (UP) societies of North-Western Europe prior to the LGM have focused on techno-typological traditions and diversification to outline the diachronic processes through which assemblage composition changed. This study addre…
The Great Divide: Teaching Collaborative Methodologies In Academia
During the summer of 2017, the University of Maryland's Anthracite Heritage Program held a combined historic preservation and archaeological field school at Eckley Miners' Village in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Complementing the University's dual masters in applied anthropology and historic preservation, this field school emphasized the value of utilizing historic preservation and archaeology to inform one another. This field school has provided a…
The zooarchaeology of complexity and specialization during the Upper Palaeolithic in Western Europe
Over the last twenty years attempts have been made to determine the nature of Upper Palaeolithic hunting specialization. This chapter traces assemblage structural ‘specialization’, where faunal assemblages are dominated by a single species, vs ‘diversity’, in which all recorded species are well represented, between 45,000 and 10,000 bp (Châtelperronian to Azilian), and demonstrates regularity in the archaeozoological record. It moves away from th…
‘The More Things Change …’: Bail and the Incarceration of Homeless Young People
Homeless young people are being held in remand despite being granted bail because the Department of Community Services cannot or will not find the young person accommodation, and there is no legally enforceable obligation on the Department to so. This practice is not new. Two rounds of amendments to the Bail Act 1978 (NSW) sought to steer young homeless people away from remand yet they have failed to have their intended effect. By failing to prov…
Reconstructing Middle Palaeolithic subsistence strategies in the South of France
This paper considers some of the evidence for the subsistence strategies adopted by Neanderthal hunter-gatherers in southern France between, approximately, 100 000 and 33 000 bp. It represents part of a larger scale project, which has considered land-use patterning during the Middle Palaeolithic in the area under study, and describes a first attempt to reconstruct the natural ‘faunal resource profile’ of the area. This is then compared with the a…
The Big-Game Focus: Reinterpreting the Archaeological Record of Cantabrian Upper Paleolithic Economy [and Comments and Reply]
From laugerie basse to jolivet: The organization of final magdalenian settlement in the vézère valley
This paper presents results of recent analysis of settlement patterns in the Vezere valley (Dordogne, France). Concentrating on the Final Magdalenian, it shows that patterning observed is a function not only of the topographic setting of sites but also of their socioeconomic context. Adoption of the Rank Size Rule as an analytical tool highlights the potential relationship between sites which, on initial examination, appear to be unrelated. It al…
Upper Palaeolithic Procurement and Processing Strategies in Southwest France
Detailed consideration of faunal assemblage structure shows that regularities occur in the way resources were obtained during the Upper Palaeolithic of Western Europe; research into anatomical element representation and butchery marks sheds light on the probable function of individual sites and their role in the regional subsistence system. Both published and unpublished data from three Magdalenian deposits from southwest France (St.-Germain-la-R…
