Der Essay plädiert dafür, insbesondere den Zweiten Weltkrieg nicht nur aus einer Perspektive der Verbrechen zu betrachten, sondern stärker als bislang die ganze Breite der Erfahrungswelt von Soldaten in die Analyse einzubeziehen. Dabei bietet es sich an, Ansätze der Gewalt- und Militärgeschichte zu kombinieren, um zu erschließen, wie Soldaten in militärischen Organisationen »funktionierten«
