Disease landscapes beyond the “Spanish flu” pandemic: Temporal patterns, re-centered narratives (1889-1970s)
We could add to this that change —the passage from one collective situation or circumstance to another— would constitute not only the most specific object of history, but als…
Devil’s choice: Ricardo Jorge, the ‘Spanish flu’ pandemic and the pneumonization of plague, 1899-1933
The Portuguese hygienist Ricardo Jorge gained some international recognition for his management of the plague outbreak that struck the city of Porto in 1899. However, it would be his experience of the “Spanish flu” pandemic of 1918-1920 that played a key role in his rejection of the rat-flea model of transmission then in force in favor of the greater relevance of interhuman trans mission. This paper aims to explain the evolution of his medical-ep…

A Thread of Life: Mahbub al-Mahmud and Medical Modernization in Early Twentieth-Century Morocco
The medical auxiliary Mahboub al-Mahmoud (Tangier, 1888-ca. 1970) remains a neglected figure in the history of Morocco's medical modernization. However, his life and professional trajectory can provide a fruitful standpoint from which to question the persisting nationalist bias that has pervaded the modest postcolonial medical historiography about that farthest corner of North Africa. Mahboub's multiple mobilities-temporal, social, geographical, …
A woman’s grace: Gender, imperialism and religion in Emily Keene’s philanthropic activities in Morocco, 1873-1941
Emily Keene (London 1849 - Tangier 1941) became a relevant figure in pre-colonial Moroccan history due to her involvement in British policy and to her philanthropic-medical initiatives during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Such prominence was closely linked with her marriage to the sheriff of Wazzan, a powerful spiritual and political figure. 'Grace', in a triple romantic, political and religious sense, was a defining feature of Keene's …
Mad at Tangier: Hygienist discourses, mental disorders, and European competition for hegemony in early twentieth-century Morocco
This study focuses on the discourse on mental pathologies affecting Western residents in Tangier that was elaborated from the late 1920s. After gaining prestige as a health resort during the nineteenth century, Tangier experienced mounting foreign intervention, ultimately leading to the establishment of an international regime, which substantially changed the city’s perception. Strong winds and a rough sea climate, coupled with the stress associa…
Not a polar island: Yellow fever, Spanish medical research, and the struggle for scientific and political hegemony in late nineteenth century Cuba
This paper explores questions related to yellow fever and the political destiny of Cuba in the late nineteenth century. A forgotten therapeutic device to treat the disease invented in that period, the "polar chamber" (cámara polar), provides a useful standpoint for reconstructing the tradition of Spanish yellow fever research in Cuba, a topic largely neglected by the medical historiography. The failed history of this device can also illuminate th…
International or French? The Early International Sanitary Conferences and France’s Struggle for Hegemony in the Mid-Nineteenth Century Mediterranean
International Sanitary Conferences (ISCs) paved the way for the creation of permanent global health agencies such as today’s World Health Organization. However, the analysis of their internationalism can be misleading if the underlying struggle between states for political and sanitary hegemony is ignored. This article argues that the early ISCs held between 1851 and 1866 were essentially a French project. They were deeply rooted in French plans …
The Invisible City: Exploring the Third Something of Urban Life
With this article I intend to contribute to the debate about how to study urban life. Firstly, I argue for the relevance of invisible and silent aspects of cities and inbetween sutures, which I understand to mean a third 'something' beyond forms and flows. Secondly, I explore several examples and draw on arguments from Wittgenstein and Lefebvre to frame this hypothesis. Thirdly, I use the chess game as a metaphor to illustrate the multiplicity an…
The army medical officer, Felipe Ovilo Canales, was a prominent and representative figure in colonialist projects in Morocco during the Restoration. Unlike other European powers, Spain's colonial missions were mainly aimed at fostering and controlling the ongoing process of Moroccan administrative reform. In the context of this overall reform strategy, Ovilo developed a political discourse that affirmed the historic convergence of Spanish and Mor…
