Pesticides and war: The case of Fritz Haber
The interconversion of military and civilian scientific research has been discussed in various contexts. Fritz Haber was concerned with the military application of poison gas research in the First World War. It is less well known that, simultaneously, he also initiated modern pest control by toxic substances, thus taking advantage of the military development for civilian purposes. However, the case of Haber shows that, in the Age of Mass Extermin…
Lebens‐Geschichte ‐ Wissenschafts‐Geschichte. Vom Nutzen der Biographie für Geschichtswissenschaft und Wissenschaftsgeschichte
Biography as a genre of historiography had been dismissed for some years, criticized for being conservative, resistant to theoretical approaches, and hostile to methodological innovations. But the predominance of a historiography devoted to structures, functions, and statistics has, however, led to a renewed interest in the human factor in history. This paper argues that the pluralism of methods and theories which has emerged thereafter reopened …
Berater, Agent, Interessent?
The paper reflects Fritz Haber's part in the negotiations on the building of vast saltpeter and ammonia plants in the first half of World War I. His activities in German war economy led to two important consequences: Firstly, he helped to solve the German ammunition crisis so that the Empire was able to continue its warfare for years. Secondly, he shared a big part in the making of a completely new German nitrogen industry
