    Open Access•Alejandra Boza Villarreal•ARTICLE•Cuadernos de Antropología•2025

This article identifies some of the political and social factors that made it possible for Costa Rica to pass a 1977 law recognizing specific rights for “indigenous communities”. Titled Indigenous Act, it was considered very progressive for its time and it remains in effect to this day. Despite constituting the main legal reference dictating the relationship between the state and the indigenous peoples, no study has been found dedicated to explai…

    Open Access•Alejandra Boza Villarreal•BOOK•Amérique latine histoire et mémoire•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 6

  • Indigenous Citizenship between Borderlands and Enclaves: Elections in Talamanca, Costa Rica, 1880-1913

    Alejandra Boza Villarreal•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 15

In Costa Rican historiography, Talamanca has often been considered one of the country's most isolated areas for two main reasons: it is a border region with a significant indigenous population within a nation that has defined itself racially as white, and its history as a banana enclave, areas supposedly characterized by a lack of significant economic and political connections with the nation-states that housed them. However, this article demonst…

Alejandra Boza Villarreal•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2015

Since the 1980s, Costa Rican historians have developed a trend of systematically reflecting on their research and writing. This volume is the latest step in that trend. It groups together the papers presented at the 2010 conference entitled Primer Seminario de Historiografía Costarricense, Siglos XIX–XXI. While the book's title emphasizes the first decade of the twenty-first century, several of the essays extend their analysis as far back as the …
