Industrial districts in medieval England
In Principles of Economics and Industry and Trade Marshall considered how the localisation of industry in medieval England, c.1100 to 1560, could inform on subsequent agglomerations, but since then scholarship has focused mainly on Marshall’s findings on nineteenth–century manufacturing districts. This article seeks to redress the balance. It makes three contributions to the existing literature. Firstly, it extends the range of districts by focus…
Compassionate Capitalism
It may seem like a recent trend, but businesses have been practising compassionate capitalism for nearly a thousand years. Based on the newly discovered historical documents on Cambridge’s sophisticated urban property market during the Commercial Revolution in the thirteenth century, this book explores how successful entrepreneurs employed the wealth they had accumulated to the benefit of the community. Cutting across disciplines, from economic a…
To Dispose of Wealth in Works of Charity”
While entrepreneurs are increasingly recognized as important participants in the medieval economy, their philanthropic activities have received less attention than those of the gentry and nobility. This article identifies the contribution that the study of medieval entrepreneurs can make to broader business history debates surrounding the identity of philanthropists and their beneficiaries, the types of causes they supported, and their impact on …
Property rents in medieval English towns
Property rents in medieval towns were an important source of income for property-owners including the king, local lords and civic authorities, and a significant expense for local residents. This article examines the causes of variation in property rents in fourteenth-century Hull, an important international port with unique records on plot dimensions. It illuminates the topography and growth of the port, identifying locations where rents were hig…
Location, location, location? Analysing property rents in medievalGloucester
Although medieval rentals have been extensively studied, few scholars have used them to analyse variations in the rents paid on individual properties within a town. It has been claimed that medieval rents did not reflect economic values or market forces, but were set according to social and political rather than economic criteria, and remained ossified at customary levels. This article uses hedonic regression methods to test whether property rent…
The history of entrepreneurship
The origins of enterprise are often associated with the Industrial Revolution, but this article presents evidence of entrepreneurial activities from a much earlier date – the medieval period. Between 1250 and 1500 the church, merchants and members of the royal court all engaged in activities that demonstrated the entrepreneurial characteristics of innovation, risk-taking and judgement. The activities of the prior of Tynemouth and the career of th…

Foreign direct investment in high-risk environments
Since the banking crisis of 2008 the global economy is perceived as riskier than before. Firms that cannot manage risks have withdrawn from countries in which they previously invested. These problems are not new. For centuries firms have invested in risky foreign environments, and many of them have succeeded. This paper reviews the risk management strategies of foreign investors. Using archival evidence and secondary sources it distinguishes the …
Brand Protection and the Globalization of British Business
In expanding on earlier analyses of the evolution of multinational business that have drawn from concepts of competition and innovation, this study examines the strategies used by British multinationals, between 1870 and 1929, to protect the global reputation of their brands, which were crucial to their survival and success. Even after the passage of new trademark legislation in 1876, enforcement of trademarks remained expensive, and often firms …
The Origin and Development of Markets
The origins of the market are obscure, but substantial documentary evidence survives from the eleventh century onward, when chartered markets and new towns were established across Western Europe. The expansion of the market system is important for business history because it created new opportunities for business growth. There has been no systematic literature review on market evolution since Henri Pirenne and Raymond de Roover, and this article …
Entrepreneurship
This paper reviews the modern economic theory of the entrepreneur. It argues that the study of entrepreneurship acts as a bridge between key disciplines – economics, sociology, management studies and economic and business history. It introduces the notion of disputable knowledge and argues that societies that recognise the disputability of both philosophical and practical knowledge are most likely to incubate successful entrepreneurs

The World's First Railway System
The British railway network was a monument to Victorian private enterprise. Its masterpieces of civil engineering were emulated around the world. But its performance was controversial: praised for promoting a high density of lines, it was also criticized for wasteful duplication of routes. This book provides a history of the railway system written from a modern economic perspective. Using counterfactual analysis, it reveals enormous inefficiency …

Railways in the Victorian Economy
This chapter argues that Victorian Britain was not so committed to laissez faire as some historians have suggested. Although railways were privately promoted they needed to be authorized individually by Local & Personal Acts of Parliament. Railways were only one of a number of innovative types of project promoted in Victorian Britain; others included ports and harbours, and gas, electricity, and water schemes. Railways connected mining and manufa…

Entrepreneurship and the Development of Global Brands
Over the course of the twentieth century, entrepreneurs developed a number of successful global brands in consumer-goods industries. However, few independent brands survived the merger waves of the 1980s. To address the question of why so few independent brands survived, this paper examines successful brands in industries that rely principally on advertising for competitive success. Successful consumer-goods brands in several industries and count…

Institutional Economics and Business History
Analytical business history requires a synthesis of theories of transaction cost, entrepreneurship and firm-specific competence. These theories can be integrated using the concept of information cost. Economies of information cost explain the emergence of market-making intermediation in capitalist economies. Economists have been so preoccupied with production that they have ignored the role of market-making intermediation, despite the fact that m…

Economics as an Imperialist Social Science
Economics is far more versatile than its critics believe. It is a method of analysis and not just a field of study. The method is to combine two core assumptions-individual optimization and equilibrium-with various sets of specific assumptions adapted to different fields of application. The method is applicable not only to the market system but also the social and political environment within which this system is embedded. Social and psychologica…

Economics and Anthropology—Reluctant Partners
Recent developments in economic theory make it an opportune moment to re-examine the role of economic principles in the interpretation of anthropological evidence. In analyzing human motivation, economics now takes proper account of affective as well as material rewards, while its analysis of individual decision-making allows for cognitive limitations, where these can be expressed in terms of information costs. There remain significant gaps in ec…
