  • The Lancet Global Health Commission on Global Eye Health: Vision beyond 2020

Open Access•Matthew J Burton, Jacqueline Ramke et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Global Health•2021

There is extensive evidence showing that improving eye health contributes directly and indirectly to achieving many Sustainable Development Goals, including reducing poverty and improving work productivity, general and mental health, and education and equity. Improving eye health is a practical and cost-effective way of unlocking human potential. Eye health needs to be reframed as an enabling, cross-cutting issue within the sustainable developmen…

  • Trends in prevalence of blindness and distance and near vision impairment over 30 years: An analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study

Open Access•Rupert Bourne, Jaimie D Steinmetz et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Global Health•2021

BACKGROUND: To contribute to the WHO initiative, VISION 2020: The Right to Sight, an assessment of global vision impairment in 2020 and temporal change is needed. We aimed to extensively update estimates of global vision loss burden, presenting estimates for 2020, temporal change over three decades between 1990-2020, and forecasts for 2050. METHODS: We did a systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based surveys of eye disease from Janua…

  • SP5-30 Evaluating the implementation of trachomoa treatment guidelines in Australia

Margaret Kelaher, Angeline Ferdinand et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction Trachoma control guidelines for the WHO recommend the SAFE strategy which includes surgery for trichiasis, antibiotic treatment, facial cleanliness and environmental improvement. Australia is the only developed country where trachoma persists. In contrast to other countries, it has largely been assumed that lack of access to antibiotics and health services is not a major contributor to the persistence of trachoma in Australia. We ass…

  • Prueba de tamizaje simplificada para identificar a personas con visión disminuida en países en desarrollo

    Open Access•Jill Keeffe, J E Keeffe et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•1998

Simple but effective tests have been produced for screening subjects with low vision in developing countries. These tests of distance and near vision, based on the E test, were evaluated and validated in trials with people aged 4-90 years, and have been field tested in the health, education and rehabilitation services in 32 developing countries. Their sensitivity and specificity as screening tools for low vision have been calculated: sensitivity …

  • Public sector personnel management in three African countries: Current problems and possibilities

    Open Access•H Rosemary Taylor, H F W Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Public Administration and…•1992•Cited by: 5•References: 2

Following visits to three less developed countries (LDCs) in Sub‐Saharan Africa (Tanzania, Kenya and Zimbabwe) to study public sector personnel systems, the author offers a review of personnel practice in Civil Service and parastatal organizations. In the main, despite a recognition that personnel issues were crucial to organizational success and thereby, ultimately, to economic development, the personnel function was found to be a largely reacti…

  • Application of the verbal autopsy during a clinical trial

    Open Access•Sara Pacqué-Margoli, Sara Pacque-Margolis et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•1990•Cited by: 2•References: 6

  • The effect of sunglasses on ocular exposure to ultraviolet radiation

    Frank S Rosenthal, A E Bakalian et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1988•References: 3

Thirty-two pairs of inexpensive sunglasses were examined for their effectiveness in preventing ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from reaching the eyes. The transmission of UVB (290-310 nm) by all of the sunglass lenses was less than 2 per cent. However, in measurements performed with mannikins wearing the sunglasses, up to 14.1 per cent of the incident UVR passed through to the eyes. When the sunglasses were moved 6 mm from the forehead, the per cent …

  • The effect of prescription eyewear on ocular exposure to ultraviolet radiation

    Frank S Rosenthal, A E Bakalian et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1986•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Several studies have suggested that ultraviolet radiation in sunlight may cause cataracts and other eye disease. We evaluated the effect of prescription eyewear in attenuating ocular exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in the sunlight portions of the ultraviolet spectrum (295-350 nm). Using natural sunlight as the source, the attenuation was measured with two ultraviolet detectors, one sensitive to only UVB (295-315 nm) and one sensitive to b…
